Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit

Job Summary

The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) advises clients on the tax implications of business objectives, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and identifies methods of complying with tax regulations. The role serves as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues, manages filing and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies, and conducts risk communication and policy change advisement.

The Senior Manager is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, participating in marketing, networking, and client relationship maintenance.

Job Duties
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure client compliance with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure internal compliance with firm policies.
    • Review T/R’s, resolve tax issues, involve specialists as needed.
    • Plan early recognition of material tax/compliance issues and consult with client or partner.
    • Review Forms 990, 990‑PF, 990‑T work papers and disclosures for audited statements.
    • Oversee budgeting, staffing, engagement process monitoring, billing, collections, and client relationship management.
    • Provide timely advice to clients.
  • Research
    • Identify and research complex issues, frame them clearly, and report findings concisely.
    • Engage firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop and recommend methods to minimize client taxes.
    • Apply tax knowledge with business/industry context for solutions.
    • Implement work plans and coordinate Specialized Tax Services assistance.
    • Serve as technical resource for peers.
    • Handle written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies.
    • Ensure compliance with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduce and improve ideas that benefit clients, the Firm, or staff.
    • Review tax implication studies and offer alternative courses.
    • Research and implement nonprofit tax strategies, including new concepts.
    • Leverage lessons learned to improve processes and methods.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervise RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on projects.
    • Review work, provide comments, and train team on software and research skills.
    • Act as career advisor; schedule and manage workloads; give performance feedback.
    • Frame projects for effective delegation.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field with CPA certification (required).
  • Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
Experience
  • Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience (required).
  • Supervisory experience (required).
License/Certifications
  • CPA certification, Attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) – required.
  • Other relevant professional degrees or certifications (preferred).
Software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (required).
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software (preferred).
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Superior verbal and written communication.
  • Strong delegation, analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Teamwork and leadership abilities; manage and develop tax professionals.
  • Ability to compose written tax advice and maintain client relationships.
  • Executive presence and primary client contact for issue presentation.
Salary
  • Illinois: $140,000 – $190,000
  • Minnesota: $130,000 – $190,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $150,000 – $200,000
