Job Summary
This position offers the opportunity to lead critical environmental engineering work focused on the closure and remediation of historical coal plant sites. The role involves developing comprehensive project portfolios that ensure long‑term environmental compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Working as part of a growing team, you will balance strategic planning with hands‑on field oversight, spending approximately sixty percent of your time on office‑based design and analysis work and forty percent conducting site visits and inspections.
This position requires close collaboration with internal environmental services teams, external engineering consultants, and construction management professionals to deliver complex remediation projects that address soil contamination, coal ash management, and site restoration. The work directly supports a major energy transition initiative, contributing to the transformation of retired coal facilities while maintaining the highest standards of environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
- Design, model, develop, and test remediation systems and closure structures for retired coal plant sites
- Develop functional requirements and technical specifications for environmental remediation projects
- Create simulations and prototypes to evaluate preliminary designs and assess system performance
- Conduct field visits and inspections at project sites within the Twin Cities metropolitan area
- Monitor quality of remediation work and control the efficiency of closure processes
- Evaluate design effectiveness, cost implications, reliability, and safety considerations for remediation solutions
- Investigate root causes of compliance issues or project failures and recommend corrective improvements
- Develop and maintain project portfolios aligned with MPCA and EPA regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with environmental services teams, external consultants, and construction firms
- Integrate multiple components and systems to produce compliant final remediation outcomes
- Apply standard civil and environmental engineering principles to complex site closure challenges
- Participate in project planning meetings and provide technical guidance to project teams
- Civil or environmental engineering expertise with focus on remediation and site closure
- Knowledge of environmental regulations including MPCA and EPA compliance requirements
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and Google Earth
- Strong technical writing and documentation capabilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for stakeholder engagement
- Advanced organizational and self‑management abilities
- Collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary teams
- Problem‑solving and root cause analysis capabilities
- Field inspection and site assessment competencies
- Project portfolio development and management
- Five to seven years of civil or environmental engineering experience required; candidates with up to fifteen years of experience will be considered
- Previous work with environmental regulations in a regulatory agency, consulting firm, or owner organization
- Experience working with civil construction contractors preferred
- Background in closure or remediation projects is advantageous but not required
- ABET‑accredited bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or Civil Engineering
- Valid driver’s license
- Fundamentals of Engineering or Professional Engineering licensure preferred as part of ongoing professional development
