AboutThe Role
We’re seeking a hands‑on Tool & Die Engineer to partner closely with our Press & Compaction team to design, build, and optimize tooling technology for compacting powder metal. You’ll own the full tooling lifecycle—from concept and CAD modeling, through tryout and continuous improvement—driving precision, uptime, and repeatability in a high‑mix manufacturing environment.
What You’ll DoDesign & Development
- Design and model tooling (dies, punches, mandrels, fixtures) using CAD; produce detailed drawings with GD&T (per ASME Y14.5).
- Engineer tooling for powder metal applications (e.g., powder metallurgy / magnetic material pressing), accounting for elastic recovery, wear, clearance, and ejection forces.
- Conduct tolerance stackups; ensure dimensional accuracy and repeatability across batches and press platforms.
Press/Compaction Operations
- Collaborate with press operators to establish robust setup sheets, tooling standards, and process windows.
- Define and implement rapid tooling changeover practices to reduce downtime and increase OEE.
Continuous Improvement & Reliability
- Diagnose wear/failure modes (adhesive wear, galling, chipping, deformation); specify materials, coatings, and heat treatments.
- Create / Implement preventive maintenance schedules, inspection criteria, and spares strategies.
- Drive improvements in cycle time, scrap rate, firstpass yield, and dimensional conformance.
Documentation & Compliance
- Create/maintain drawings, BOMs, routings, and work instructions; update revision control.
- Ensure safety and compliance with applicable standards (machine guarding, lockout/tagout, materials handling).
- 5+ years in tool & die design/build for press operations, powder compaction, or closely related high‑pressure forming.
- Strong GD&T proficiency (feature control frames, datums, profile, runout, position) and tolerance stack analysis.
- Proficiency in CAD (preferred in SOLIDWORKS) for 3D modeling and 2D detailing; ability to model complex die sets and assemblies (FEA, CFD, Thermal).
- Hands‑on experience with press setup/operations (mechanical or hydraulic presses); understanding of compaction process variables.
- Demonstrated ability to reduce tooling changeover time (SMED, standardized work, quickrelease/quickchange mechanisms).
- Experience with tool steels, carbides, surface treatments.
- Familiarity with metrology (CMM, optical comparator, surface finish), and statistical process control (SPC).
- Preferred: B.S. in Tool & Die, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent apprenticeship.
- Considered:
Equivalent experience with proven portfolio of tooling projects. - Experience with ferrites / magnetic powder compaction.
- Knowledge of powder flow, die-fill dynamics, and ejection/lubrication strategies.
- Knowledge of state-of-the-art tooling fabrication processes like WEDM, precision manufacturing of hard metals and high-performance materials selection.
- Exposure to FMEA, PPAP, control plans, and ISO/TS quality systems.
- Lean/6σ certification; OEE measurement and improvement.
- Basic FEA for stress/deflection in tooling components.
- Mechanical Design Rigor:
