This position supports the closure, remediation, and long‑term management of former and retiring coal‑fired power plant sites. The work focuses on coal ash, contaminated soils, and associated civil/environmental issues to bring facilities into a safe, compliant, long‑term final state aligned with regulatory requirements.
You will join an expanding project team working on a 10‑year+ portfolio of remediation, demolition, and reconstruction projects linked to the broader transition from coal to cleaner energy sources.
Key Responsibilities- Support the planning, development, and execution of closure and remediation projects for legacy power plant sites.
- Participate across the full project lifecycle:
- Planning and scoping
- Procurement support
- Execution oversight
- Field inspections and site visits
- Coordinate closely with:
- Internal environmental/compliance teams
- Other project managers and construction managers
- External environmental and civil engineering consultants
- Civil/environmental construction contractors
- Help develop and manage project portfolios and strategies for site closure and remediation.
- Perform field visits and inspections to active remediation sites (approximately 40% of time once fully ramped, depending on project phase).
- Use tools such as Google Earth, Microsoft Office, and SharePoint for planning, documentation, and coordination.
- Maintain strict adherence to environmental regulations and company policies, including required regulatory and safety training.
- ABET‑accredited bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
- Approximately 5–15 years of relevant professional experience (mid‑career level).
- Target range is 5–7 years, but candidates with 2–4 years of very highly relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience with environmental regulations, such as:
- Working for a regulatory agency
- Working for an environmental consulting firm supporting clients on compliance
- Working for an owner/operator on environmental compliance projects
- Experience related to:
- Soils, earthwork, coal ash, and/or contaminated soil
- Civil or environmental projects at industrial or utility sites
- Prior experience with closure and remediation of power plant or similar industrial sites (highly desirable but not required; considered a niche skill set).
- Experience working for:
- Environmental consulting firms, and/or
- Civil construction contractors involved in earthwork and remediation.
- FE (Engineer‑in‑Training) and/or PE (Professional Engineer) on a typical professional development track. (PE not required.)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Microsoft SharePoint for document management and collaboration.
- Google Earth (for site visualization and planning; straightforward to learn).
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work closely with internal environmental teams and external partners.
- Ability to thrive in a long‑term, stable project environment with multi‑year portfolios.
- Comfortable with both office work and field work.
- Detail‑oriented, with a strong safety and compliance mindset.
