Intake Call Summary – E&C Engineer II (Civil/Environmental) (1597)
Scope of Work / Project Overview- Closure and remediation of historical/retired coal plant sites (soil, coal ash, contaminated materials).
- Developing project portfolios for long‑term environmental compliance aligned with regulatory requirements (MPCA, EPA).
- Adding to an existing team due to increasing environmental project needs.
- Approximately 60% office work, 40% field visits and inspections depending on the project phase.
- Field work within ~1 hour of Twin Cities (Sherco/Becker, King Plant in Bayport).
- No people management.
- Internal Environmental Services group (MPCA/EPA interface).
- External engineering consultants (environmental & civil design), construction firms.
- Internal project managers and construction managers.
- Day 1:
Logistics—computer, badge, required training. - Week 1:
Meet project team, visit sites with PM. - Month 1:
Begin assigned responsibilities on remediation projects and portfolio planning.
- Standard business hours with flexibility (approx. 7:30–4 or 8–5).
- Expected to be on‑site or at project locations Tue–Thu each week.
- Up to ~45 hours per week depending on project needs; some OT may occur.
- 5–7+ years civil/environmental engineering experience (mid‑career up to ~15 years considered).
- Experience with environmental regulations (regulator, consulting firm, or owner).
- Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Google Earth.
- ABET‑accredited degree in Environmental or Civil Engineering.
- Valid driver’s license.
- FE/PE as part of professional development (not required).
- Experience with civil construction contractors.
- Experience in closure/remediation projects (nice to have due to niche nature).
- Strong communication and collaboration.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to self‑manage the workload.
- Primary office: 414 Nicollet Mall; optional office at Sherco/Becker - 13999 Industrial Blvd, Becker, MN 55308
- Travel reimbursed at cost; no per diem.
- Overnight travel is rare (only for farther sites).
- Two‑round process: virtual first, onsite follow‑up; panel of 1–2 people.
- Standard 12‑month contract, high likelihood of extension (10‑year program).
- Long‑term, stable project portfolio (10+ years).
- Part of major environmental transformation from coal to renewables.
