About the Job

Background

Parking and Transportation Services is a self‑supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet, streets, walkways and way‑finding. PTS supports alternatives to the single‑occupant vehicle and promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool or take the bus.

The department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and administers the fuel credit card, vehicle insurance and safety, and employee driver training programs.

PTS Mission

Facilitating safe and effective integrated transportation systems that provide services for pedestrians, bicycles, transit and vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • 80% Maintain Parking and Transportation Equipment
    • Supervise and perform installation, maintenance, repair, calibration, and operation of complex low‑voltage, electromechanical transportation‑related equipment IOT equipment using a variety of tools and equipment including electronic multimeters and diagnostic tools like temperature sensors, lumen level meters, specialized equipment or cards provided by vendors for their equipment. Systems include:
      • Parking Access/Revenue Control
      • Parking Access and Revenue Control Systems (PARCS)
      • License plate recognition (LPR) systems
      • Parking meters and pay stations
      • Structure Technology
      • Light‑Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and way finding signage
      • Garage door operating systems
      • Data Collection Technology
      • Vehicle counting equipment
      • RFID bike tracking system
    • Analyze current equipment for improvements and replacement. Recommend new equipment purchases based on technical performance and cost factors.
    • Work directly with university electricians when needed on high voltage terminations related to the maintenance, repair, and installation of parking systems.
    • Maintain inventory of parts and components and is shop‑equipped with testing and repair devices.
    • Confer with vendors and translate functional requirements into engineering specifications.
    • Secure and manage relationship suppliers of parts and equipment and provides specifications for custom‑built equipment.
    • Define and complete testing matrix of new equipment upon completion of installation. Reject equipment not meeting specified standards.
    • Ability to operate a skid steer with the primary responsibility of offloading delivered equipment to maintenance.
  • 20% Administer Parking and Transportation Equipment
    • Perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance programs.
    • Develop and conduct training programs for students, technicians, and staff members on operation of equipment.
    • Maintain records of expenditures for equipment and outside service and assists in budget planning by providing equipment cost benefit analysis.
    • Utilize computer systems such as Microsoft Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite.
    • Utilize online and web‑based custom transportation systems and software.
Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in the field outdoors. Work in most facilities requires exposure to weather and seasonal elements (heat, cold, snow). Facility layouts include varying/uneven surfaces and stairwells. This position requires walking, climbing stairs and/or ladders, and operating motor vehicles, skid‑loaders, etc. Exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and elements possible. Positions may require the ability to walk or stand for majority of day;

bend, climb, reach, kneel; carry, lift, push and pull 50 lbs. or more.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license
  • Completion of a two‑year technical school program related to electrical or mechanical systems plus a minimum of four years' work experience in this specialized field; or BS degree in electrical or mechanical engineering and one year of related work experience.
