Project Summary
The Mill City Museum intern supports staff in cataloging, digitization, and organization of the staff library and research materials. The position provides hands‑on experience in visitor services, and offers exposure to the broader functions of museum operations and interpretation. This internship provides introductory site‑based experience with cataloging and digitizing research materials.
This position does not include formal training in cataloging or digitization principles and practices.
Responsibilities- Assist with organizing the Mill City staff library to improve accessibility and usability of materials.
- Participate in the digitization and organization of staff research materials, gaining exposure to documentation standards and best practices.
- Assist in organizing and processing of program‑use materials and objects.
- Shadow staff in visitor services and interpretation to understand museum duties and operations.
- Under guidance, assist in a limited capacity with museum operations, including the information desk.
- Experience organizing library and collections
- Hands on experience working with program and training materials
- Practical experience working with the public in a museum/educational setting.
- Enhanced professional communication skills
- Introductory interpretation skills
- Insight into museum operations
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
- Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or have graduated with a degree in the following areas:
History, library science, information science, liberal arts/humanities - Detail oriented and well organized.
- Enjoyment in sharing historical knowledge.
- Ability to take direction but work autonomously.
Interns are required to participate in three, in‑person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.
