A 4‑H Summer Coordinator works with the local 4‑H Extension Educator and a team of youth and adult volunteers to support and advance the 4‑H program in a specific county. The summer coordinator is supervised by and receives work direction from the 4‑H Extension Educator.
Location and Work EnvironmentPositions are located in county Extension Offices across the state.
Work Schedule4‑H Summer Coordinator positions are contingent on local funding and vary from 8 to 13 weeks in length, with part‑time to full‑time hours. Positions will begin in mid‑May to early June.
Responsibilities- Planning, facilitating/implementing, and/or evaluating aspects of 4‑H programs (e.g. day and/or residential camps, 4‑H experiences during the county fair, educational workshops, county ambassador activities).
- Recruiting, orienting and guiding volunteers for specific 4‑H programs.
- Coordinating registration and logistics for youth and volunteer participation at county, regional and state events.
- Communicating with current and potential 4‑H families and assisting with media relations.
- Promoting the 4‑H program to potential members, families and volunteers.
Required Qualifications
- Required to complete job screening questionnaire to be considered for any roles ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).)
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Current college undergraduate students are not eligible for this position.
- Must be at least 18 years old by the start date.
- Basic experience with word processing, email, and internet browsers.
- Proficient in oral and written English communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and build rapport with a wide range of stakeholders who reflect our communities, including youth, parents, adult volunteers, and staff.
- Good problem‑solving skills and a solid understanding of risk management.
- A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4‑H program, and the local 4‑H program.
- Basic understanding of youth development principles and best practices.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to organize work and produce expected work products.
- Ability to adapt to changes (e.g., programming, work priorities).
- Evidence of ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Education in youth development, sociology, education, volunteer systems management, communication, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of full‑time experience working with youth, coordinating volunteers, and/or planning and implementing programs/events.
- Must complete all required training, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. Mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with University policy.
- When not in the assigned office location, employees must be reachable with a mobile number at the employee's own expense.
- Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds frequently.
- Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time or sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require multiple hours of standing or sitting.
- Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including an in‑person I‑9 (identification verification process), and have a successful completion of a background check + MVR (Motor Vehicle Record), before the first day of work.
