DCD (Severe-Profound)

Responsibilities
  • Provide support services to children with moderate to severe disabilities enrolled in MPS, within scope of authority and training, in compliance with MPS policies, quality standards, and the Standards of Effective Instructional Support for Educational Assistants.
  • Assist staff to facilitate educational functions and services to maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment in the Least Restrictive Environment possible; support student independence and classroom learning.
  • Assist students in learning processes; apply behavior support plans, reinforce positive behavior, provide individual instruction, and encourage peer socialization.
  • Monitor student activities, explain social norms and disciplinary consequences, de-escalate confrontations, and enforce district policies.
  • Monitor and record data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintain files and records of student progress and activities.
  • Maintain behavior documentation and related files for IEP, SAIl, and FBA, as applicable.
  • Assist with transitions and daily routines (medications, meals, buses, classes); attend to daily hygiene as directed by licensed staff.
  • Promote student independence in community, recreational, school, leisure, and vocational activities.
  • Report learning problems, behavioral issues, and other concerns to supervisor or Principal.
  • Prepare classroom environment and materials; assist with classroom activities, special projects, and after-school programs.
  • Provide customer service to parents/guardians; explain school rules and respond to questions.
  • Demonstrate courteous, cooperative behavior; support a harmonious and effective workplace.
  • Promote the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and district information.

CLASS DESIGNATIONS

  • Bilingual:
    Interpret and translate information related to educational programming for students with combined Special Education and English Language Learner needs.
  • Special Education – Amharic, Cambodian, Hmong, Liberian, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tibetan, Vietnamese

Intervention SEA
:
Provides support in the least restrictive environment; implements Prevent, Teach, Reinforce plans with fidelity. Personal transportation required as position may move between sites.
SEA Cadre
:
Reserve/substitute role assigned in emergencies across disability areas; transportation may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

  • High School Diploma/GED; AND
  • Monitors completion of 90 quarter or 60 semester credits in Education, Child Development, Behavioral Sciences or related area; OR
  • Passing score of 460 (or higher) on the Para Pro Assessment; AND
  • Two (2) years of paid experience working with children; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Knowledge of
  • Classroom policies, procedures and processes.
  • Methods and techniques to assist students in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Methods and techniques for working with students with disabilities and special needs.
  • Local community resources and regional services programs.
  • Record keeping and records management; computer usage; safety rules and regulations.
Skill in
  • Monitoring and improving student behavior and learning skills.
  • Assisting children and special needs students and assessing educational needs.
