OverviewClassroom Support
Summary:
Under general supervision, assists students in school classrooms with educational programs and assignments, provides assistance to Teachers as directed, and assists students with after-school and special education programs and special events.
- Assist students with educational programs and special assignments; perform duties within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies and the Standards of Effective Instructional Support for Educational Assistants; duties vary by job assignment.
- Assist MPS teachers and staff to facilitate educational functions and other services to maintain a safe and productive learning environment; reinforce classroom learning and improve personal skills; assist teachers with managing classroom, materials and student behavior.
- Assist students in learning processes; reinforce positive behavior, provide individual instruction, encourage socialization and good communications.
- Administer a variety of school programs, student services, community services, special assignments, and educational programs in support of MPS goals, including program outreach & marketing, grant program oversight, bilingual & hearing-impaired translator/interpreter, student testing, after-school activities, recreation programs, media & technology, security, student behavior support, community relations, transportation, mentoring & tutoring, volunteers, attendance & truancy, English Language Learning, vocational training, accounting & budgets, and special events.
- Monitor and supervise student activities; promote respect, support diversity, explain social norms and disciplinary consequences, de-escalate personal confrontations, and enforce District policies and rules of conduct.
- Assist students to achieve learning objectives with individual assistance and small group sessions.
- Monitor assigned students, and record data for academic and behavioral assessments; maintain files and keep records of student progress and activities; ensure all required written reports are completed and submitted daily.
- Report learning problems, behavioral issues, and other concerns to supervisor or Principal.
- Communicate with parents, students and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality of personal information.
- Provide general office and administrative support for the assigned program and customer service to parents and guardians, answering questions and explaining school rules.
- Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; promote a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
- Promote the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
- May be required to work outside normal business hours to accomplish position requirements.
- Behavior Resource: Assist in maintaining student discipline in the school, on the grounds, and at special events; assist administration in communicating with and understanding students at risk; maintain student behavior through intervention and parent contact.
- Bilingual – language-specific roles as an interpreter to facilitate provision of services to non-English speaking or bilingual community members (examples include Hmong, Oromo, Somali, Spanish).
