About the Job

The Center for Early Education and Development (CEED) within the Institute of Child Development is seeking an Observation Manager with extensive experience working in childcare programming, data collection, and child and program assessment tools. This individual will serve as the CEED Observation Manager for an observation project in early childcare settings across Minnesota. This person will work closely with the CEED Associate Director and others designing, implementing, and analyzing the observation work on this project.

This position requires travel using your own transportation.

Position Overview

The individual in this position works under an annual renewable contract contingent upon performance and available funding.

The University of Minnesota is a national leader in research, education, and outreach. This position would contribute to that mission by being part of the research-to-practice arm of the top developmental psychology program in the nation. The role involves collaboration with a vibrant team on various research-to-practice projects. This position is based on campus, with required travel. Work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.

Job Responsibilities
  • Reliability management (65%)
    • Lead the CEED Observation team in completing observations timely and with high quality.
    • Manage daily operations, collaborate on project deliverables, and ensure observation and reliability protocols are followed.
    • Monitor observer reliability, provide professional development, and analyze data including observer reliability.
    • Review feedback reports for accuracy, consistency, and grammar.
    • Ensure timeliness and accuracy in data systems.
    • Develop and update observation protocols biannually.
    • Implement strategies to improve reliability, such as additional field work or manual review.
  • Observation (20%)
    • Conduct on-site observations as needed.
    • Maintain assessment tool reliability.
    • Write feedback reports and complete data entry following protocols.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration (10%)
    • Participate in meetings, contribute ideas, support outreach activities, and attend conferences.
    • Lead observation team meetings and participate in strategic planning.
    • Support external projects and complete additional tasks as assigned.
  • Training and Mentoring (5%)
    • Provide training and mentorship to staff and the early care community.
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications
    • A master’s degree in early childhood development, psychology, education, social work, or closely related field, with at least four years leading data collection or observation projects, or a BA/BS with six years of relevant experience.
    • Experience with early childhood assessment tools and observations.
    • Ability to maintain assessment tool reliability through recertification.
    • Membership and training approval in DEVELOP.
    • Experience developing and leading online and in-person coursework and communities.
    • Effective collaboration skills across diverse backgrounds.
    • Proven leadership in team management and strong administrative skills.
    • Ability to travel frequently within Minnesota and attend national conferences.
    • Experience with confidentiality and professional standards.
