About This Job
The overall function of this position is to assist the Project Engineer in the activities of the Project Engineer's office by leading a team of inspectors engaged in construction inspection, specializing in areas of responsibility in Portland Cement Concrete Pavement, Superpave Asphaltic Concrete Pavement, Structural Concrete operations, Sub‑Surface Drainage Systems, and Embankment & Base Course testing and procedures. This position reports directly to the Construction Inspector Supervisor.
The incumbent must be self‑motivated and be able to perform all construction contract administration and related duties with minimal supervision and be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Minimum Qualifications- Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus four years of experience in construction inspection or experience in the maintenance of public streets, roads, bridges, highways, or associated structures; OR
- Six months of experience in sub‑professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus four years of experience in construction inspection or experience in the maintenance of public streets, roads, bridges, highways, or associated structures; OR
- Twenty‑four semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics; OR
- A bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management, or construction technology; OR
- Possession of an engineer intern certificate.
- Oversees contractor compliance with project specifications, safety signage, and quality standards; performs material sampling, density testing, surface evaluations, and measurement verification; compiles project quantities, payment summaries, and field change information; maintains project diaries and public relations; provides training and monitors EEO compliance.
- Manages project documentation including pay items, audits, and quantity validations; reviews plans for constructability; uses departmental computer and engineering applications; receives additional job training as needed.
- Collects field data and cross sections, prepares sketches, and calculates design quantities following standard departmental design practices.
- Supports general construction office functions and ensures departmental efficiency and public interest protection.
- Performs additional duties as required, including emergency or disaster response activities.
Appointment Type:
Promotional, open only to current permanent classified DOTD employees.
Compensation:
Additional $2.00/HR Premium Pay for Every Hour Worked.
