The Water Technician 2nd Shift position performs independent monitoring, maintenance and repair of the utility's water infrastructure system and operation facilities. This position performs customer service, semi-skilled and manual work, reports for duty in emergency situations and operates a variety of tools and equipment. This position is able to be filled at the I or II level depending on qualifications.
The starting salary for this position is $27.03 to $30.03 for a Water Technician I and $31.16 to $34.62 for a Water Technician II depending on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications. Second shift employees receive a $1.00/hour alternate shift stipend in addition to a $.25-.30 alternative shift differential pay. Further increases to the top of the range, which is $34.55 in 2026 for the Water Technician I & $39.81 for Water Technician II, will be based on the employee's performance post hire.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday: 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with paid lunch.
Some required overtime; mainly during the winter season.
Second shift employees receive an extra $1.00/hour alternate shift stipend in addition to a $.25-.30 alternative shift differential pay.
Essential Functions
The following are normal for the position but shall not be construed as exclusive or inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.
* Inspect water pumping station buildings and grounds as well as storage tanks for general condition and normal operation by performing daily rounds.
* Periodically monitor water distribution system with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions system and respond to alarms as needed.
* Deliver water samples to shipping company and occasionally assist with collecting samples.
* Receive and answer phone calls.
* Investigate and resolve customer concerns.
* Investigate and diagnose possible water main breaks, service leaks, fire hydrant damage and other utility infrastructure damage.
* Call in appropriate staff for emergency repair work and assist as necessary.
* Flush water distribution system.
* Install and remove hydrant water meters for permitted use.
* Operate various motorized equipment, trucks and tools.
* Install, read, replace and repair water meters; check for cross connections.
* Operational knowledge of auxiliary power generation equipment.
* Respond to emergency overtime situations that require working nights, weekends and holidays.
* Perform outdoor physical work.
* Ability to share the responsibility of an on-call rotation if necessary.
* Safely perform confined space entry and trench excavation work.
* Prepare daily notes of work activities.
* Perform custodial tasks at water pump stations and water field office.
* Secure DPW building and entry gates.
* Utilize the City's Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system to complete work within the department.
* Utilize mobile devices for daily assignments and to complete work orders.
* Provide support and assistance to other public works departments as needed.
Minimum Requirements
* High School Diploma/GED.
* A valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
* Wisconsin Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of employment.
* Basic mechanical abilities and computer skills.
* Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.
* Comfortable in an isolated work environment.
Preferred Requirements
* Wisconsin Class B CDL strongly preferred at time of hire.
* Prior work experience for a Water Utility and/or in construction trade work.
* Knowledge of plumbing installations, pipes and piping material.
* Operation and maintenance knowledge of SCADA systems, water pump stations and water storage tanks.
* Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Operator Certification in Distribution.
