Responsibilities
  • Performs pre-analytical log-in and processing functions for patients serviced by outreach clinics, inpatient units, and clinics. Accurately labels specimens according to policy with initials on all labels. Consistently meets the productivity defined by the department leader.
  • Identifies samples with incomplete, inaccurate, or ambiguous information and follows up with Client Services or creates a clear CSHOLD.
  • Uses available resources to define test mnemonics, sample stability, and processing requirements.
  • Interprets the Client Database to determine when and where to find pertinent information.
  • Performs specimen processing per policy, verifies identity of mother and aliquot tubes before manual aliquoting, operates centrifuges, pipettes, and labels samples with initials. Schedules appointments and releases pending orders in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) per policy.
  • Follows policy for cart runner, specimen delivery, and transporter assignments, ensuring timely pickup and delivery to the correct testing departments or hospital areas.
  • Triages and adheres to special handling and time-sensitive specimens.
  • Completes competency assessments and maintains documentation of competency or improvement plans.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
    Allomap/Study processing, Transport, In Sort Triage, Pneumatic Tube System usage, specimen disposal, packaging of biohazard boxes, scanning racks, stocking labels, disinfecting work stations, and assisting other departments with Pre-Analytical tasks as needed. May perform in-charge duties for the shift with leadership discussion and oversight. Completes and emails shift Ops-report to leaders.
  • Communicates effectively in writing and verbally; informs leadership of issues or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Performs phlebotomy (as applicable) with walk-in clients using customer service standards including AIDET. Collects appropriate tubes, initials collection information on specimens, and completes requisitions and insurance information.
  • Provides patient instructions for non-blood sample collection and adheres to customer service standards during interactions. Ambulatory: greets and schedules patients, verifies and updates demographic information.
  • Follows policy for manual entry of client requisitions and QA; documents problems and ensures initials on all specimens labeled by processor. Maintains productivity per department leader.
  • Documents samples correctly during manual order entry or specimen interface log-in and ensures tagalongs are attached to applicable paperwork. Expedites delivery to testing departments and handles outreach statistics.
