Safety Specialist –
Children's Wisconsin
Job Summary: Provides leadership in clinical practice, facilitates safety education, and promotes a culture of safety for patients and staff throughout the organization. Serves as a patient safety leader, collaborating with front line staff to ensure competent and safe care to children and families. Participates in safety related clinical improvement initiatives. Acts as a change agent to lead, facilitate and support hospital and medical staff to create and sustain a culture of high reliability that focuses on elimination of preventable harm.
Facilitates and coaches teams regarding risk assessment and analysis and assists them to develop action plans to prevent errors from future occurrences.
Essential Job Functions:
- Supports the intake and classification of events into the reporting system and performs cause analysis of safety events in the organization.
- Reviews safety events and develops appropriate tools and training so clinical program leadership learns how to conduct these reviews and can partner effectively with patient safety efforts.
- Collaborates closely with the Risk Management Department in the review of serious safety events.
- Facilitates Daily Operational Briefings.
- Organizes an annual and on‑going assessment of safety risks by working closely with the organizational leadership and works with the team to develop annual patient safety goals.
- Coordinates patient safety initiatives, including participation on and/or leadership of project teams, and ensuring successful implementation of recommendations/decisions.
- Serves as a resource for employees and medical staff for quality and patient safety improvement initiatives. Consults with identified hospital departments or medical staff sections to educate others on the QI process and regulatory standards.
- Maintains a working knowledge of national patient safety goals and patient safety literature and serves as a resource for current patient safety information to hospital and medical staff.
- Supports initiatives to create a patient safety culture using transparency of information as the foundation of this effort.
- Conducts safety rounds at least weekly to inquire about safety concerns with the front line staff.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Professional level of knowledge acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in nursing, health care administration, or other clinical field or relevant experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing and/or health care clinical experience and a minimum of 1 to 2 years of quality improvement experience, including consultation or direct work in quality improvement or rapid cycle improvement, failure modes analysis, systems thinking concepts, team facilitation, performance measurement and/or stratification of data.
- Education in healthcare safety science and experience on safety related projects strongly preferred.
- Content expert in safety science and quality improvement concepts.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to negotiate collaborative efforts with other departments and to implement patient safety standards and guidelines.
- Ability to problem‑solve, make independent decisions, formulate reports, perform statistical analysis and interpret data.
This is a hybrid position working a combination of onsite at the Children's Wisconsin main campus and remote.
