Job Responsibilities

The Certified Peer Specialist in the Treatment Alternatives Program (TAP) provides support, education, and mentoring to adults enrolled in TAP services. The role is that of a coach or mentor who uses lived recovery experience to promote wellness, purpose, relationships, and insight to move forward.

Essential Functions
  • Act as a member of the TAP team providing services to people with substance use or co‑occurring needs.
  • Comfortably utilize life and recovery experiences to role‑model and support people in reaching identified recovery goals.
  • Build on individual strengths to meet individualized recovery needs; services are person‑centered.
  • Provide a wide range of recovery supports to assist the individual and their family through the recovery process.
  • Promote wellness, self‑direction, and recovery by enhancing skills and abilities to reach recovery goals; advocate with dignity and without trauma.
  • Develop a mutually empowering relationship that encourages living in recovery.
  • Provide services in the community, including people’s homes and other community locations.
  • Participate in recovery team meetings to create individual recovery plans, identify and prioritize goals, and monitor progress.
  • Appropriately document all contact and team member interactions to adhere to program requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and a case file as required by agency policy, government regulations, and applicable local, state, and federal codes.
  • Attend staff meetings, in‑service training, seminars, and conferences as required.
  • Maintain flexibility in daily work schedule to adequately meet program needs.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures while carrying out daily responsibilities.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure transportation to TAP‑related appointments as needed.
  • Other job‑related duties as may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
Job Qualifications

Minimal

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent; experience serving people with mental health, substance use, and co‑occurring needs. Successful completion of a state‑approved Peer Specialist Training and current state certification as a Peer Specialist. Meet all WCS and contractor requirements for criminal and caregiver background checks, driver’s record, and drug screen. Valid driver’s license and sufficient insurance to meet agency requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: State‑approved Peer Specialist Training and certification; knowledge and skills to work with a mental health and substance use recovery population; strong organization and quick rapport‑building skills; excellent assessment and interviewing skills; understanding of mental health and substance use needs; ability to work through difficult situations; flexibility and multitasking ability; effective use of time and resources to maintain quality service.

Job Information Work Relationship and Scope

Reports directly to the TAP Program Director in the Behavioral Health Division. Advocates for the individual's needs with the TAP team members and others as needed.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the community, including people’s homes and various community‑based locations. Ability to work in an office setting. Average hours: 40 per week.

Physical Demands

Mobile with significant time in the community, including transportation, home visits, and meetings; driving throughout Milwaukee County; ability to go up and down stairs.
