SummaryPerforms a variety of support duties to assist the Anatomic Pathology Department with daily operations.
Responsibilities- Completed competencies for 2 benches is required for LTA I.
- Accessioning (Histology and/or Cytology)
- Case Assembly
- FNA and cytology processing or Frozen Sections
- IHC
- Consistently receives, accepts and recognizes specimens arriving in the lab; checks for proper identification and specimen transport condition; accurately accession specimens and select paperwork necessary to maintain identification; create worksheets; recognize STAT specimens and handle them according to protocol.
- Properly dispose of signed out specimens and placentas. Use Cerner to pull an accurate list with appropriate dates for disposal. Follow procedures for disposal of biohazard specimens including labeling and weight limits.
- Utilize tissue processing procedures. Program, operate, and maintain tissue processors; rotate or change solutions and paraffin timely. Monitor and document instrument performance; recognize malfunctions and identify need for service.
- Expedite collection and sorting of slides into racks in ascending order for transfer and staining.
- Operate autostainer, perform maintenance, troubleshoot per SOPs. Change or rotate solutions daily; run control slides; document QA/QC actions.
- Operate auto cover slipper per SOPs. Maintain QA/QC records and cover slips manually if cover slipper malfunctions.
- Maintain and service instruments per protocols. Demonstrate ability to operate instruments for intended purpose; monitor performance and document malfunctions; revalidate equipment after repair.
- Label slides with correct printed labels; verify against worksheets in Cerner; manage frozen section slides and sublabels; ensure proper distribution timing and recipient.
- Order, package and distribute cases for courier pickup; verify cases/slides.
- Communication/Customer Service: communicate clearly, provide information, listen, handle inquiries and follow up with supervisors as needed.
- File blocks kept in histology; organize blocks sent to outside/partner facilities.
- Unpack supplies and stock shelves; inventory and notify leadership of shortages.
- Participate in competency assessments and maintain documentation of competencies and improvement plans.
- Assist in organizing Histology slide file room; file paraffin blocks and slides in numerical/sub-label order; retrieve materials on request; transfer materials to offsite storage as needed; update storage logs; ensure availability of slide trays and boards.
- Operate cryostat with proper settings; section tissue; label slides; ensure diagnostic quality; disinfect and clean equipment; manage stains as needed.
- Coverslip slides manually or with cover slipper with minimal artifacts.
- Perform assigned duties (inventory, waste disposal, stocking, etc.) in a concise, orderly manner.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; disinfect instruments and surfaces; document QA/QC actions; handle sharps and chemicals safely.
- Assist with competency assessments and participate in training new Anatomic Pathology Assistants; maintain training documents and competencies.
- High school diploma, and
- Two years of clinical laboratory experience, including:
- Accurate and timely performance of procedures; understanding and adherence to policies;
- Accurate performance and reporting of select laboratory tests; documentation of quality control measures;
- Accurate data entry and verification in a Laboratory Information System (LIS);
- Current enrollment or prior attendance at a post-secondary program in science or healthcare;
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to work well in both team settings and independently;
- Good judgment, initiative, and adaptability to changes in work assignments.
