Position: Radiation Safety Technologist I

Overview

The Radiation Safety Technologist I supports the daily operations of the Office of Radiation Safety (ORS). The Technologist works closely with the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer to assist with the physical transportation and tracking of radioactive materials and monitoring radiation sources. The Technologist supports activities of the Radiation Safety Program, as well as supporting ORS office functions and small projects as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Review orders for radioactive materials, including receipt, checking, delivery and data entry for each item.
  • Maintain database and files for inventory, authorized users, radiation workers, areas for use of radioactive materials, and other program records.
  • Monitor approval timelines including tracking deadlines for program components.
  • Provide hands on support for clinical and research-related projects, such as surgical procedures, therapies, and clinical investigations, involving radioactive materials.
  • Assist in the collection, processing, and maintenance of radioactive waste management in compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, state, and institutional regulations and related guidance.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer in conducting audits for compliance and licensing conditions.
  • Coordinate and provide personnel monitoring services for staff requesting or requiring dosimetry and conducting bioassay measurements.
  • Coordinate training for program participants.
  • Serve on the Radiation Safety Committee as needed.
  • Collaborate on the development of program materials, including educational materials and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge – Skills – Abilities
  • Must have very strong customer service skills that include courteous and helpful behavior; accomplishing tasks through teamwork and initiative; and anticipating the needs of all those with whom you work.
  • Must be able to learn and understand fundamental concepts related to working with radioactive materials and radiation sources and practically apply a working knowledge to day-to-day tasks.
  • Must be able to work independently with direction and to foster collaborative working relationships and participate as a member of a dynamic team.
  • Organization, time management, interpersonal, and problem solving skills required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Must be comfortable with technology and be proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Qualifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

Minimum Required

Education:

Associate’s Degree

Minimum

Required Experience:

1 year

Preferred Experience: Experience in scientific, medical, or educational research environment preferred.

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
