Shift: 3rd shift (10:00 pm – 6:00 am; weekend & holiday rotations required).

Summary

Performs pre‑analytical log‑in and processing functions for patients serviced by outreach clinics.

Responsibilities
  • Performs specimen interface log‑in for inpatient units, clinics, or outreach clinics, correctly labeling specimens and ensuring no mislabels.
  • Identifies samples with incomplete, inaccurate, or ambiguous information and follows up with client services or creates a clear CSHOLD.
  • Uses available resources to define test mnemonics, sample stability, and processing requirements.
  • Interprets the Client Database, locating pertinent information.
  • Processes specimens according to policy: verifies tube identities, performs manual aliquoting, operates centrifuges and pipettes, labels specimens, and follows stability guidelines.
  • Schedules appointments and releases pending orders in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) per policy.
  • Runs cart runners, specimen delivery or transporter assignments, accurately picking up and delivering samples or blood products to the correct testing department.
  • Triages and adheres to special handling and time‑sensitive specimens.
  • Completes all competency assessments and maintains documented records.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, including Allomap/Study processing, transport, in‑sort triage, pneumatic tube usage, specimen disposal, biohazard packaging, scanning, recycling, stocking, disinfection, and assistance to other departments.
  • Actively participates in shift management responsibilities and escalates patient concerns appropriately.
  • Communicates effectively, addressing inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Performs phlebotomy (when applicable) with walk‑in clients using AIDET customer service standards, collecting appropriate tubes, labeling, and completing requisitions.
  • Provides patient instructions for non‑blood sample collection and follows WDL’s Performance Excellence Customer Service Standards.
  • Manually enters client requisitions and QA, recognizing and documenting problems.
  • Handles outreach and frozen specimen procedures, ensuring appropriate temperature and expediting delivery.
  • Operates and performs daily maintenance on automation lines, including masking analyzers, stocking supplies, and troubleshooting hardware issues.
  • Performs urine bench and 24‑hour urine operations according to policy.
  • Assists in training as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Some clinical healthcare experience or related education preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic Windows‑based computer skills, including keyboarding, data entry, and email (Epic experience preferred).
  • Phlebotomy training/diploma preferred.
