The Fire Protection Engineer 3 conducts plan reviews of alarm, detection, and other fire protection systems in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.

Essential Functions
  • Review shop drawings for all fire alarm and other fire protection installations for compliance with code requirements. Review and process plans and permits.
  • Provide technical advice to design professionals by performing a risk analysis of buildings and by providing guidance on how adaptive reuse of an existing building can be achieved with appropriate use of fire prevention techniques.
  • Evaluate alternate means and methods for achieving code compliance.
  • Evaluate the storage, handling and use of flammable and combustible materials and hazardous material compliance with fire codes, standards and other regulations.
  • Provide training and guidance to DNS staff in the areas of fire protection, fire alarm systems and the storage and processing of hazardous materials.
  • Identify improvements and changes needed in ordinances, policies, and code provisions and draft suggested changes for review.
  • Assist members of the public and City Officials with inquiries about fire detection and protection codes, standards, and DNS processes related to fire detection and protection requirements, plan review, permitting, and inspection.

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of experience in fire protection systems, building inspection or a closely related field, working with the International Building Code (IBC), the International Fire Code and the National Fire Protection Association Standards. Relevant experience includes the design, review, installation or inspection of fire protection and life safety systems, along with the administration and enforcement of applicable codes.
  • Possession of the following certifications as a condition of passing the one-year probationary period and maintained throughout employment:
    • State of Wisconsin (DSPS) Commercial Building Inspector AND;
    • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist or Certified Fire Plans Examiner.
  • Possession of the following certifications issued by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) as a condition of passing the one-year probationary period and maintained throughout employment:
    • Water-Based Systems Layout-Level I AND;
  • Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

    Technical

    • Knowledge of the International Code Council’s International Fire Code and the referenced National Fire Protection Association standards relating to fire protection and alarm systems.
    • Knowledge of or ability to learn the current State of Wisconsin Commercial Building Code.
    • Ability to conduct a risk analysis to evaluate existing buildings for required fire protection and life safety systems.
    • Knowledge of and ability to work with computer applications, including database, spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and electronic plan review software to conduct plan review, maintain records, prepare correspondence, and create reports and presentations. Ability to use the Land Management System (LMS) to enter and retrieve information as well as conduct research.
    • Ability to review, interpret and evaluate construction documents for code compliance.
