The Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University invites applications for a full‑time, non‑tenure track participating faculty position at the rank of Instructor of Practice with a teaching specialization in sports journalism and media, beginning August 2026. We seek an engaged teacher who can work collaboratively across departments within the college and with other academic programs at the university.
This faculty member will be a principal contributor to the college’s new and rapidly growing interdisciplinary major and minor in sports communication.
Candidates should have a teaching and/or professional background in sports journalism, reporting, and/or broadcasting, including but not limited to working as a print, radio, or television sports reporter, producing news broadcasts, calling (play‑by‑play, color, or sideline), or producing live sports events.

The new faculty member will also develop other suitable course offerings, initiatives, and programs in the area of sports communication, as well as participate in and lead collaborations with community members and alumni in local and regional sports organizations.
J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication includes the departments of Communication Studies, Digital Media and Performing Arts, Journalism and Media Studies, and Strategic Communication. A transformational $25 million gift from the Diederichs funded the renovation of historic Johnston Hall, which houses the College, providing state‑of‑the‑art laboratory and studio technology. The gift supports faculty development, travel, and research and reinforces the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will have the expectation of teaching courses in journalism, sports reporting, and/or sports broadcasting at the undergraduate level.
Preferred applicants will have a strong commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and will be willing to contribute to curriculum development and diversity and inclusiveness initiatives.
The new faculty member will also work with colleagues to plan the annual Axthelm Memorial lecture, which invites a sports professional to campus to speak and engage with our college community, as well as the annual student sports summit.
In addition to teaching, the candidate will be responsible for advising undergraduate students and serving on college and university committees.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in an area of communication or closely related field with a knowledge base in sports, journalism, and/or media, and five or more years of professional experience. - The candidate should demonstrate potential for engaged teaching excellence and academic advising.
