Overview
The Special Education Substitute Teacher provides continuity of instruction and student support in the absence of a regularly assigned special education teacher. This role is responsible for implementing existing lesson plans, maintaining a safe and structured learning environment, and supporting students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The substitute works collaboratively with paraprofessionals, related service providers, and school staff to ensure students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs are met throughout the school day.
UCC School teachers are responsible for creating a positive, engaging, and inclusive educational atmosphere that fosters student growth and achievement, where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, social, physical and psychological growth. Teachers are responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional curriculum/program that will result in students achieving academic success in accordance with United Community Center’s policies, procedures and curriculum guidelines.
This role includes planning and delivering standards-aligned instruction, assessing student learning, managing classroom behavior, and building strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues. - Implement teacher-prepared lesson plans and instructional activities aligned to students’ IEP goals.
- Deliver instruction to individuals and small groups using accommodations and modifications as outlined in IEPs.
- Support differentiated instruction across academic, functional, and life-skills settings, as applicable.
- Provide consistent supervision to ensure student safety at all times.
- Support students’ behavioral needs using positive behavior supports and school-approved behavior plans.
- Assist students with transitions, routines, and self-regulation strategies.
- Work collaboratively with special education paraprofessionals, general education teachers, and related service providers.
- Follow guidance provided by case managers, building administrators, and support staff.
- Document relevant student observations and communicate concerns or successes to appropriate staff.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with FERPA and IDEA.
- Follow school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and flexibility in a dynamic learning environment.
- Students experience a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment during the teacher’s absence.
- Instructional routines and behavioral expectations are maintained with minimal disruption.
- Students continue making progress toward IEP goals through consistent implementation of supports.
- Lesson plans and IEP accommodations are implemented with fidelity.
- Positive student engagement and appropriate classroom behavior are maintained.
- Feedback from school administrators, case managers, and paraprofessionals reflects professionalism and effectiveness.
- Students’ safety and dignity are consistently upheld.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor to support students, colleagues, or the school community.
- Demonstrates basic computer knowledge, including email, Excel, Word, Google Forms, and other Google applications.
