Instructor, American Sign Language Interpreter

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and deliver engaging instruction in accordance with established curriculum guidelines.
  • Manage classroom/laboratory environments to ensure a conducive learning atmosphere.
  • Develop, monitor, and revise curriculum to maintain course effectiveness and relevance.
  • Manage equipment, supplies, and materials necessary for instructional activities.
  • Assess student performance and provide constructive feedback to support their academic growth.
  • Advise students on academic matters and provide guidance to support their educational journey.
  • Collaborate with advisory committees, colleagues, and industry partners to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Attend departmental and institutional meetings to contribute to academic planning and decision‑making.
  • Promote educational programs, participate in student recruitment efforts, and support initiatives to retain students.
  • Support student organizations and activities to enrich their educational experience.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with business and industry partners to facilitate student opportunities and program growth.
  • Complete program evaluations, engage in continuous professional development, and stay current in the field.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall mission and objectives of the institution.
Qualifications
  • Educational requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree in a deaf‑related field such as Sign Language Interpreting, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Vocational Rehabilitation, or American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Occupational experience:
    Minimum of three (3) years (6,000 hours) of work experience as an educational sign language professional.
  • Work experience must be recent: at least one year of experience in the last five years or two years of teaching in Sign Language in education coursework at the post‑secondary level within five years.
  • Industry or vendor certification:
    Must have one of the following – Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) of 3.3 or higher, Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification, or Wisconsin Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (WisRID) in combination with a letter of recommendation.
  • Licensure:
    Desirable educational interpreter licensure granted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Assistance (or equivalent state licensure).
  • Additional requirements:

    Valid Wisconsin State Sign Language Interpreter Licensure, NIC, CSC, CT/CI, DI, or NAD certification, strong background in American Sign Language, strong voice‑to‑sign and sign‑to‑voice skills, knowledge of assessment of student academic achievement techniques, ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and commitment to standards of teaching excellence and MATC career essentials.
Essential Technology Experience
  • Proficiency with email systems (Gmail, Outlook), telephone and voicemail systems, and Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace.
  • Experience with online information management systems (e.g., INFOnline) for student advising, student programs, grading, class schedules, and rosters.
  • Experience with web‑based course‑management systems such as Blackboard.
  • Experience with technology‑based instructional delivery systems including SMART Board, interactive touch‑screen monitors, LCD projectors, DVD players, and other classroom technology.
  • Experience with emerging technologies such as social networking applications.
