Job Summary
A Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) substitute teacher provides an instructional program for students which is appropriate to their educational needs and developmental level. The educational program is offered in an equitable, multi-cultural setting and teaches all children to think deeply, critically and creatively. The teacher supports the MPS strategic plan.
Applications for the Substitute Teacher position are being accepted by the Office of Human Resources. The following items must be uploaded with your application (even if you are a previous employee and have submitted transcripts in the past):
- A current resume
- One (1) letter of recommendation dated less than one (1) year and manually signed by the author ( UNLESS YOU ARE A RETIRED MPS TEACHER
- Official degree conferred college transcripts ( UNLESS YOU ARE A RETIRED MPS TEACHER )

Who May Apply
Appointment is subject to a criminal background check, a drug/alcohol test and credential verification. If you are a recently retired teacher, you must wait 75 days before applying to be a substitute teacher with Milwaukee Public Schools.
Qualifications
Applicants MUST:
- Have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Hold a current Short-Term Substitute License or Teacher License
- Have completed a Substitute Training Program and has applied for a Substitute Teacher License. (IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE A LICENSE)
Responsibilities
- Maintains a broad knowledge of all facets related to the teaching assignment as related to the subject and grade level of the students.
- Uses research-proven practices to improve student achievement.
- Implements Board policies as necessary to improve the educational environment.
- Plans and organizes material for instruction and presents and reinforces lessons as appropriate.
- Addresses different learning modalities, including auditory, visual and kinesthetic.
- Uses appropriate classroom management strategies and relates well to the student population.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Substitute teachers are hourly employees and earn $28.94 for each hour worked. Work time does not include a lunch break, and sub teachers are entitled to a 30-minute, duty-free unpaid lunch.
If substitutes are asked to cover a classroom they are not paid extra. Assignments to cover a classroom will be made at the principal's discretion.
Substitute teachers are NOT benefit eligible.
