The Village of Whitefish Bay is seeking a knowledgeable, detail-oriented building inspector to join our Building Services team. In this role, you will help ensure the safety, integrity, and compliance of residential and commercial construction and property throughout the Village. The Building Inspector is responsible for reviewing submitted plans and specifications, issuing permits, conducting inspections at various phases of construction, and enforcing Municipal ordinances and State building codes.
Code enforcement duties include issuing violation notices, documenting findings, and performing necessary follow-up to ensure corrective action. This position will also perform inspection and outreach associated with private lead service line replacements throughout the community.
- Conduct inspections, prepare and review permits, and issue correction orders or official correspondence to ensure compliance with issued permits, approved plans, municipal ordinances, state statutes, and adopted state and national building codes and standards.
- Respond to phone calls, voicemails, and emails in a timely manner; provide customer service assistance to walk-in customers at the service counter.
- Investigate complaints and referrals through inspections of public and private properties to ensure compliance with Municipal Code and State Building Codes.
- Obtain and maintain required inspection certifications and code knowledge through examinations, continuing education, training programs, mentoring, and subscriptions to code and regulatory resources.
- Review construction plans for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances while acting as an officially delegated agent of the State of Wisconsin.
- Assist with inspections of driveway approaches and review of private drainage systems.
- Support lead service line replacement programs through outreach efforts and inspections.
- Attend Board and Commission meetings as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
This position requires the ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Physical abilities include walking, kneeling, climbing, lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment.
Education and Experience Requirements:- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Three or more years of recent experience in construction, inspection, architecture, drafting, or related building/construction trades
Certifications:
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
- Valid WI UDC Construction Inspector certification and WI UDC HVAC Inspector certification.
- WI UDC Electrical and/or Plumbing Inspector Certification preferred at time of hire.
- Must be able to obtain and then retain WI UDC Electrical and/or WI UDC Plumbing Inspector Certification within twelve months of hire.
- WI Commercial Building Inspector certification preferred.
$30.00 - $36.84 Hourly Based On 2080
