Duties and Responsibilities- Act as liaison to the public, and coordinate and participate in volunteer activities.
- Assess and maintain trails and perform other maintenance duties as assigned.
- Assist stable staff with maintenance and cleaning in and around the stable as needed.
- Attend seminars, workshops, training sessions, etc., to maintain proficiency.
- Care for and maintain agency horses.
- Complete and maintain Bureau records, reports, files, and logs.
- Conduct, provide and participate in mounted park patrols, programs, special events, ceremonial events, mutual aid, mounted unit training, and mounted search and rescue operations.
- Effectively applying techniques and available resources to enforce applicable laws and regulations, provide visitor services, assess facility resources, assist visitors with first aid, and other public services as required.
- Issue parking citations and enforce agency regulations.
- Participate in all mounted ranger activities, initiatives, and programs.
- Plan, design, and create displays, brochures, flyers, and other public literature.
- Prepare and conduct mounted unit programs and stable tours for general public, schools, special needs, and other special interest groups.
- Produce and provide informal and formal informational/educational programs, demonstrations, and materials to schools, civic groups, and the general public as requested, covering ranger programs, park activities and services, outdoor skills, natural and cultural history, and search and rescue.
- Respond to emergency, non-emergency, and medical incidents, providing first aid/CPR when required.
- Support DCR special events statewide.
- Transport agency horses to destinations when assigned.
- Supervise employees of lower grade upon request.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Ability to stand, ride (a patrol horse), and walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to successfully complete the agency’s Mounted Unit Certification Program.
- Ability to work in the environment of a horse stable and paddocks, including, but not limited to, being around animals/horses, hay, shavings, horse products, and having the ability to use 5‑gallon water containers/buckets, lift bales of hay, shavings, and grain bags, and working in extreme weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
- At least two years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation; or
- Any equivalent combination of required experience and the following substitutions:
- An associate’s degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation.
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Possession of a current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificate from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
- Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate and first responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
