Landfill Equipment Operator II & III

General Description: Operates heavy equipment for landfill operations. Must perform manual labor, maintain equipment, and interact with the public courteously.

Essential Functions
  • Operate landfill equipment including grader, bulldozer, backhoe, gradeall, compactor, front end loader, lowboy, dump truck, boom tractor, roll off truck, and/or forklift.
  • Wash, clean and perform minor maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Interact with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the County’s mission, vision, values, and goals; represent the County professionally and dignified at all times.
  • May have a role in the County’s disaster preparation and/or recovery as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during, and/or after an emergency.
  • Meet minimum attendance standards including working weekends.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance for Landfill Equipment Operator II;
    Three (3) years for Landfill Equipment Operator III.
  • Experience operating equipment in a landfill environment preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license at the date of hire; must maintain license while employed.
  • Landfill Operator Certification required; must obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Class “B” commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement required for II;
    Class “A” commercial driver’s license and/or hazardous endorsement preferred for III.
Physical & Environmental Conditions

Physical Requirements: Medium work; exert up to 50 lb frequently; lift up to 50 lb; standing, walking on uneven surfaces; repetitive wrist motions; operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment. Visual acuity required for operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment. Requires clear spoken communication.

Environmental Conditions: High risk with exposure to dangerous situations; adverse weather, extreme temperatures, noise, dust, chemicals; exposure to vibration; proximity to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of operation and minor maintenance of heavy construction equipment; safety regulations related to assigned equipment. Must understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain daily log and maintenance records.

Landfill Equipment Operator II (Starting @ $20.77 hourly)

  • High school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Preferred experience in landfill environment.

Landfill Equipment Operator III (Starting @ $22.27 hourly)

  • High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Preferred experience in landfill environment.
