Landfill Equipment Operator II & III
General Description: Operates heavy equipment for landfill operations. Must perform manual labor, maintain equipment, and interact with the public courteously.
Essential Functions- Operate landfill equipment including grader, bulldozer, backhoe, gradeall, compactor, front end loader, lowboy, dump truck, boom tractor, roll off truck, and/or forklift.
- Wash, clean and perform minor maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Perform manual labor.
- Interact with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Demonstrate commitment to the County’s mission, vision, values, and goals; represent the County professionally and dignified at all times.
- May have a role in the County’s disaster preparation and/or recovery as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during, and/or after an emergency.
- Meet minimum attendance standards including working weekends.
- Perform related duties as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance for Landfill Equipment Operator II;
Three (3) years for Landfill Equipment Operator III. - Experience operating equipment in a landfill environment preferred.
- Valid driver’s license at the date of hire; must maintain license while employed.
- Landfill Operator Certification required; must obtain within one (1) year of employment.
- Class “B” commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement required for II;
Class “A” commercial driver’s license and/or hazardous endorsement preferred for III.
Physical Requirements: Medium work; exert up to 50 lb frequently; lift up to 50 lb; standing, walking on uneven surfaces; repetitive wrist motions; operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment. Visual acuity required for operating motor vehicles and heavy equipment. Requires clear spoken communication.
Environmental Conditions: High risk with exposure to dangerous situations; adverse weather, extreme temperatures, noise, dust, chemicals; exposure to vibration; proximity to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of operation and minor maintenance of heavy construction equipment; safety regulations related to assigned equipment. Must understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain daily log and maintenance records.
Minimum &Preferred Qualifications
Landfill Equipment Operator II (Starting @ $20.77 hourly)
- High school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
- Preferred experience in landfill environment.
Landfill Equipment Operator III (Starting @ $22.27 hourly)
- High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
- Preferred experience in landfill environment.
- 11 paid holidays.
- Annual leave: 0–4 years – up to 104 hrs/year; 5–9 years – up to 130 hrs/year; 10–14 years – up to 156 hrs/year; 15–19 years – up to 182 hrs/year; 20+ years – up to 208 hrs/year.
