Overview
Although daily duties remain the same, additional responsibilities depend on the department’s needs and the priorities agreed with the Head of Healthcare, Primary Care Lead and Mental Health Lead. Healthcare delivered should be evidence‑based, person‑centred and non‑judgemental.
Shift patternsEarly shift: 7:30am – 3:30pm
Lates shift: 1:30pm – 9:30pm
- Complete medication rounds in the units and dispense controlled medication within the healthcare building.
- Attend emergency response situations, including restraints (observation only) and life‑threatening emergencies, and complete post‑incident paperwork.
- Triage and assess patients during admission, and run treatment protocols.
- Refer children to other healthcare professionals and chase any relevant plans made by medics.
- Manage and care for minor illnesses and injuries.
- Act as the named lead nurse for an area of healthcare.
- Play a key role in the important ‘Early Days in Custody’ of prisoners, working closely with other departments to ensure that all risks are assessed and managed.
- Ensure effective pre‑release care planning.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments alone or with colleagues and provide feedback to the multi‑disciplinary team, ensuring that planned care is individual and appropriate to the patient’s needs.
- NMC pin holder.
- Experience of working in a healthcare environment, i.e. hospital, custody, community setting, clinics etc.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Knowledge of current professional issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organisational skills; able to plan own work but also work effectively within a team.
- Ability to prioritise and make sound decisions, sometimes under pressure.
- Ability to use a range of IT applications, e.g. Word, System1, Gmail and Google applications and web‑based applications.
- Previous employment in a custodial setting.
- Experience working with young people, preferably within secure or custodial settings.
- A minimum of 1‑year post‑registration clinical experience.
