Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) is a district general hospital operating across three sites in Milton Keynes. The Imaging Department delivers a vital service to the Trust, offering a wide range of diagnostic and interventional imaging, including ultrasound, CT, MRI, DEXA, mammography, general X‑ray, and interventional radiology.

We are seeking enthusiastic applicants for a fixed‑term, full‑time Band 7 Sonographer to support our obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound services. The post will be based across all MKUH sites, including the acute hospital and Community Diagnostic Centre locations at Whitehouse Park and Lloyds Court.

Applicants must hold a UK CASE‑accredited postgraduate qualification in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound and will work autonomously, delivering high‑quality ultrasound examinations and diagnostic reports.

We welcome applications from HCPC or NMC‑registered Sonographers with recent NHS experience and a passion for delivering high‑quality obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound. Two years' recent NHS experience is preferred, along with a flexible, patient‑centred approach to care.

Essential criteria include excellent communication and organisational skills, commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and a sound knowledge of ultrasound safety, quality assurance, legislation, and health and safety requirements. Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and experience using PACS/RIS systems, are also required.

Job responsibilities

Communication and relationship building

  • Communicate with all referring clinicians to ensure that imaging requests are justified and appropriate.
  • Provide clear, concise and accurate ultrasound reports.
  • Inform a referring clinician of urgent or unexpected results, as appropriate.
  • Liaise with appropriate staff regarding the organisation of follow‑up outpatient appointments for patients following ultrasound imaging.
  • Communicate in a concise, sensitive and appropriate manner, complex or contentious information regarding ultrasound scanning procedures to patients and their relatives, as well as other hospital staff and referrers.
  • Responsibilities for analysis

  • Use a high level of analytical judgement in this role.
  • Assess information about the patient’s condition, symptoms, laboratory test results and previous imaging, pulling the information from multiple electronic sources in order to understand the relevance and suitability of the test and to determine the most likely…
