The eye clinic is a friendly environment where multi‑professional working is encouraged. At Lloyds Court Community Diagnostic Centre, our Optometry department consisting of 7 Optometrists and 14 Ophthalmic Technicians provides invaluable support to the wider medical team within the busy outpatient eye clinic. ‘We care We communicate We collaborate We contribute’.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans.
  • Perform anterior segment imaging and fundus photography with the Optos wide‑field camera.
  • Undertake visual field assessment using the Humphrey Visual Fields analyser.
  • Test and record vision using a sight test chart – Snellen and LogMAR.
  • Handle administrative and clerical duties as required.
  • Manage working problems in the absence of the Lead Ophthalmic Technician, e.g. cancelling clinics due to staff sickness or other unforeseen absences.
  • Liaise with IT and EBME to discuss equipment problems and technical updates.
  • Engage external equipment providers to manage technical problems and training updates.
  • Gather information for use in audits and present findings at the annual Optometry Department audit.
  • Support colleagues with personal development and maintain excellent communication skills, particularly with patients who have hearing, visual, learning or physical barriers.
  • Perform OCT scanning and ocular photography using the automated Topcon OCT analyser in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Conduct visual field assessment with the automated Humphrey analyser in accordance with protocols.
  • Access and review previous patient notes within the electronic document management system.
  • Use the hospital IT system (ECare) to verify appropriate follow‑up appointments.
  • Ensure comprehensive, clear clinical written records compliant with Trust policy.
  • Alert the responsible Ophthalmologist to significant changes in scan or test images or visual acuity.
  • Keep all standard operating procedures up to date with new or upgraded equipment.
  • Maintain daily equipment (OCT, Visual Fields, Optos camera, etc.) by cleaning and routine maintenance per departmental protocols.
  • Monitor equipment stock levels and reorder as needed.
  • Undergo technical equipment training supervised by the Lead Ophthalmic Imaging Technician, Head Optometrist and Clinical Ophthalmologist.
  • Maintain technical competency in core areas and expand expertise in new imaging applications.
  • Comply with Trust Information Governance policy.
  • Contribute to and present at the annual Optometry departmental audit.

Position Overview

We are looking to recruit a part‑time, enthusiastic Ophthalmic Imaging Technician to cover a maternity leave post. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and provide clinical testing of visual fields, ophthalmic photography and Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT). We are actively involved in teaching and clinical audit. Previous experience in diagnostic Optometry/Ophthalmology work is an advantage. This role would suit a hospital‑based Ophthalmic Technician or a community‑based Optical Assistant interested in gaining extended clinical skills.
