Position: Consultant Oncology-Urological Cancer with interest in gynae cancer

Overview

Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for two full-time Clinical Oncology Consultants linked with Honorary Contracts to Oxford University Hospital, with Urology and Gynae cancer focus (gynae focus chemotherapy and palliative radiotherapy). The closing date is 15 February 2026.

The post holder will support the busy established practice within the oncology departments, retain close ties with the departments, and facilitate high-quality clinical care and research. The successful candidates will be integral members of both oncology departments and share consultant responsibility for Urology, breast and gynae patients. Clinical research is an important component of the post.

Applicants will have completed specialist training in Clinical Oncology and will hold MRCP or provide evidence of equivalent training and experience.

Role includes contributing to a comprehensive, efficient, evidence-based oncology service with responsibility for patient care and associated administrative duties (with administrative support). Leadership, development and organisation of services within the unit, development of sub-specialty interests aligned with Division needs and the Trust strategy are expected.

Main duties of the job

Roles and Responsibilities

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed to meet service needs.

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide day-to-day outpatient and inpatient care and supervision of patients with breast and colorectal cancer as part of multidisciplinary teams; undertake radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment provision.
  • Attend the weekly multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Provide, with colleagues, clinical care and supervision of patients attending the Day Unit for systemic and supportive therapies.
  • Help develop oncology services across the organisation and actively participate in recruitment to and development of cancer research studies.
  • Care for inpatients under charge and participate in the acute oncology service, including ward rounds and inpatient advice.

Additional duties:

  • Teaching, examination and accreditation duties; contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity.
  • Engage in job planning and the appraisal cycle and contribute to the appraisal of doctors in training.
  • Provide cover for Consultant colleagues during leave in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Conduct suitable duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Engage in ward cover supporting a 1:5 weekend cover.

As Consultant in Clinical Oncology, provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility, including patients referred to you, cared for by you or by your team, and patients of consultant colleagues when covering on-call or annual leave.

Participate in clinical and service activities to ensure high patient care standards across the Trust. Work in close cooperation with medical, professional and managerial colleagues inside and outside the specialty to contribute to the Trust’s strategic direction.

Person Specification Qualifications / Registration
  • Full and specialist GMC registration (or eligible for registration within six months of interview) with a licence to practise.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent by date of interview, or within six months of award.
  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent.
  • FRCR (Clinical Oncology) or equivalent.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence-based practice across relevant oncological subspecialties.
  • Broad experience within and outside the specialty.
Clinical Experience
  • Postgraduate experience including higher medical training at specialist registrar or senior registrar level; part of this may be in a post of equivalent responsibility.
  • Experience in relevant oncological subspecialties and in Acute Oncology.
Skills
  • Enthusiasm for developing tumour-site specialisation and cancer services.
  • Strong organisational and workload management abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff.
Personal
  • Ability to work in a team and with all staff; able to work independently and under pressure.
  • Balance individual requirements with Directorate and Trust priorities.
