About The OpportunityThe Parking Enforcement Officer position offers a chance to play an important role in supporting public safety and quality of life in the City of Mill Valley. As a highly visible member of the Mill Valley Police Department, you will serve as a community ambassador by helping residents and visitors understand parking regulations while ensuring fair and consistent enforcement. This role combines outdoor fieldwork with customer service and problem-solving.
You will patrol neighborhoods and commercial areas, interact with a diverse population, and help keep streets safe, accessible, and well organized. Your work directly supports traffic flow, local businesses, and neighborhood livability.

Under the general direction, the Parking Enforcement Officer performs a variety of law enforcement support duties, with the majority of responsibilities involving enforcement of parking regulations. The PEO performs technical field and office work to enforce appropriate codes, laws, and regulations and to execute related programs pertaining to on-street and off-street public parking within the City of Mill Valley.
Examples of Essential Duties (include but are not limited to):
- Patrol assigned routes on foot and/or driving a parking enforcement vehicle.
- Enforce parking laws, codes, and regulations.
- Identify vehicles in violation of parking laws, codes, and/or regulations, and issue appropriate citations or remedies.
- Collect coins deposited in meters.
- Prepare statistical reports on activities, as requested.
- Minor repair and maintenance of parking meters.
- Receive and record complaints from citizens regarding illegally parked and abandoned vehicles.
- Enter data into computer for abandoned and illegally parked vehicles.
- Mark and arrange for towing of abandoned or illegally parked vehicles or impounding of vehicles for outstanding tickets.
- Chalk tires of vehicles parked in non-metered spaces, records time, and returns at specified intervals to ticket vehicles remaining in spaces illegally.
- Provide assistance and general information related to permit areas to a diverse population.
- Explain code and policy requirements.
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot computer programs, software and other related equipment used to perform required duties.
- Set up and remove barricades and temporary signs.
- Direct traffic.
- Front counter reception and customer service.
- Perform related duties as required.

The successful candidate will have the skills and abilities to learn, understand, interpret, and enforce appropriate City and State parking and vehicle codes, laws and regulations. Excellent communication skills will allow the ideal candidate to adequately explain vehicle and parking laws, codes, and regulations to members of the public. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the physical fitness necessary to perform the duties of a Parking Enforcement Officer, which may include walking or standing for extended periods, working in various weather conditions, and navigating city streets and sidewalks on foot or by vehicle throughout a shift.
Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One year of work experience involving frequent public contact and making independent decisions
- Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license
