Overview

At Smilow Cancer Hospital we are committed to delivering coordinated, patient-centered care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Manager (NM), the Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides both direct and indirect patient care activities that support comprehensive treatment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the RN in gathering and reporting patient data to aid in assessment, planning, and evaluation of patient needs.
  • Obtain and record vital signs as ordered or delegated by the RN.
  • Perform technical duties and selected treatments providing safe and efficient care.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification (e.g., , barcode scanning) according to policy.
  • Support multidisciplinary team communication, including discussing patient and family needs and cultural considerations.
  • Cover the Business Associate desk in the absence of the BA under the direction of the NM or designee.
  • Participate in shift bedside reports and maintain clear, professional communication with patients, families, and staff.
  • Relocate or rotate to meet patient care needs as required.
  • Complete non-therapeutic functions, including removing medication from pneumatic tube systems and delivering to appropriate personnel.
Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED; plus CNA or analogous qualification such as Medical Assistant, CPCT, EMT, a student nurse from an accredited program, or LPN.

Experience

  • Either two (2) years of relevant direct patient care experience or the education described above.
  • Successful completion of the Patient Care Associate Competency Based Training, practicum, unit-specific, and age-specific competencies.

Licensure & Certification

  • CT CNA certification, EMT, a student nurse from an accredited program, or an LPN.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training must be obtained prior to employment or within one (1) month of hire; PCT must maintain BLS certification at all times. If training expires, the PCT will be suspended until documentation is provided.

Special Skills

  • Successful completion of orientation.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrated positive initiatives with patients and staff.

Physical Demands

  • Regular standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision requirements include near, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Typical work environment noise is moderate.
