Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Landscaping, Groundskeeper
Salary Range $21.44- $31.09 Hourly
Under supervision, this position acts as a supervisor and is responsible for the coordination and operation of assigned employees to provide maintenance support for the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Coordinates, as assigned, the activities of workers ondaily tasks and specific projects involving construction, maintenance or other areas related to parks maintenance.
- Effectively supervises assigned employees, including team leads and crews, to ensure adherence to processes, policies, and projects, and that proper workmanship and materials are used.
- Provides training to employees on various items, including standards and equipment.
- Organizes necessary equipment and supplies for daily assignments.
- Cleans and performs maintenance on equipment.
- Documents and reports estimated damage to landscapes.
- Completes necessary reports appropriately, including material safety data sheets (MSDS) and Texas Department of Agriculture reports.
- May assist in planning landscaping, chemical application, and athletic field maintenance of infields and outfields.
- Operates equipment such as tractors, tillers, trucks, and back‑hoes. Required to drive City vehicles with a trailer attached.
- Operates small power tools such as tiller, push mower, edger, weed eater, chain saw, etc.
- Performs all aspects of parks maintenance including the removal of litter and debris; cleaning and performing maintenance on restroom facilities; mowing parks, athletic fields, medians, and right of ways; trimming trees and shrubs; planting, watering, spraying and pulling weeds as needed; digging ditches, spreading gravel and sand, and laying sod.
- Provides support for all special events including vehicle and pedestrian traffic control, and loading and unloading supplies.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED equivalent, is required.
Minimum of four (4) years of general parks maintenance, irrigation, or landscape maintenance experience is required. One (1) year experience in a lead or supervisor position preferred.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
- Advanced knowledge of maintenance and parks including property and equipment maintenance, best practices, proper chemical handling and storage, irrigation systems, and proper methods for minor repairs relative to parks maintenance.
- Knowledge of city and departmental practices, procedures, systems, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, ordinances, and best practices relating to parks.
- Ability to correctly interpret, explain, and apply laws, rules, operations, practices, procedures, regulations, and policies.
- Advanced ability to be organized and have efficient management of time and deadlines.
- Advanced ability to interact with people in a professional and congenial manner.
- Advanced ability to communicate in a clear, effective, and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to effectively supervise in a proactive, appropriate, and productive manner.

- Ability to perform strenuous and routine work which requires consistent physical labor.
- Ability to read and interpret papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias, to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement and to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to allocate and utilize limited resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Ability to follow instructions, safety practices, and perform work accurately and thoroughly which requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously under time pressures and deadlines.
- Ability to operate motorized and non-motorized equipment, including a variety of saws, drills, and tools, and handle various building materials in a safe and effective manner.
- Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.
Mobility within a field environment with uneven terrain and during inclement weather is required.
Subject to be on-call during non-working hours.
Must be able to work flexible hours, and holidays and weekends as needed.
Licenses & CertificationsMust possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record as established by the City of Midlothian driving standards.
Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certification is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
