Position: Police Officer (Lateral)

Eligibility

TCOLE licensed police officer applicants only. Applicants must have a current TCOLE Peace Officer License and a minimum of two years of continuous full‑time employment that required a TCOLE Peace Officer License or an equivalent certification.

Police Officer Lateral Policy
  • Valid certifications: TCOLE Peace Officer License.
  • Experience:

    minimum of two years of continuous full‑time employment that required a TCOLE Peace Officer License or equivalent.
  • Breaks in service exceeding twelve months will require additional review.
Lateral Pay Program

Step # – Years of Service Credit: 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8.

Definitions – Service Credit(s) – continuous full‑time employment with a comparable‑sized municipality or an agency that provides similar environmental and job‑related experience, successful completion of an approved Academy and Field Training Program.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to dispatched calls for all types of police services, including motor vehicle crashes, assaults, domestic disturbances, thefts, and other criminal or civil complaints.
  • Operate an emergency vehicle during day and night, pursuing suspects at speeds exceeding posted limits while exercising due care and caution.
  • Write reports of offenses, accidents, arrests, and other public safety incidents; direct traffic, intervene and mediate in crisis situations, perform building and residence security checks.
  • Execute misdemeanor and felony warrants of arrest; take fines and bonds, release prisoners, fingerprint immigration licensing applicants, employment applicants, and transfer prisoners between agencies.
  • Present crime prevention programs; provide residential and commercial security surveys; perform related duties and special projects as assigned; maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and a United States Citizen.
  • Knowledge of modern police principles, state, federal, and local criminal and juvenile laws and statutes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form.
  • Skilled in investigative and interrogative procedures, problem solving, and evidence recognition.
  • Proficient with firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, and related law enforcement tools and equipment.
  • Team member ability; social service referral skills; court testimony ability; computer and software proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, CRIMES CAD, PSRS, Identix).
  • Commitment to punctuality, confidentiality, and regular work attendance.
Physical Requirements
  • Visual acuity: both eyes correctable to at least 20/20 binocular vision.
  • Functional sense of smell required.
  • Uncorrected hearing: no loss greater than 25 dB in the 500, 1000, 2000, or 3000 hertz frequencies.
Special Requirements
  • Must successfully complete all required training.
  • Must be able to work during inclement weather, be available for call back, and work irregular hours including rotating shifts, nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet department standards.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, CJIS and fingerprint check, and meet state and federal criminal justice information security standards.
  • Position classified as safety‑sensitive; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Licenses & Certifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Texas class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Peace Officer Certification (required or to be obtained within six months of employment), and maintain it throughout employment.

Work Environment

Primarily field environment with exposure to weather conditions such as heavy rain, wind, ice, and dust. Physical demands medium; may be required to lift or carry heavy objects over 170 lbs.; occasional physical abuse or wounds; noise exposure during firearms practice or training; rare exposure to caustic substances from chemical releases.
