Role Summary

Staff Nurse – Endoscopy is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. The role involves supporting patients through all phases of endoscopy — pre‑assessment, intra‑procedure, and recovery — while maintaining clinical excellence, infection control, and patient dignity. The Staff Nurse will work collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure an optimal patient experience and adherence to hospital and national standards.

Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical Practice
  • Deliver safe, evidence‑based nursing care to patients before, during, and after endoscopic procedures.
  • Prepare endoscopy rooms and equipment according to procedure requirements and infection control standards.
  • Assist the endoscopist and anaesthetist during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Monitor and assess patients’ clinical status throughout the endoscopy process, responding promptly to any deterioration.
  • Adhere to the NMBI Scope of Practice and relevant professional standards.
  • Handle all endoscopy and anaesthetic equipment correctly, ensuring proper cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance in line with hospital policy.
  • Participate in the safe administration and monitoring of conscious sedation under appropriate supervision.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive nursing documentation.
2. Patient‑Centred Care
  • Promote a welcoming, respectful, and reassuring environment for patients and their families.
  • Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Provide clear information and support to patients pre‑ and post‑procedure, including discharge instructions and aftercare advice.
  • Advocate for patients’ rights and ensure their comfort, safety, and emotional well‑being throughout their stay.
3. Collaboration and Communication
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, anaesthetists, and the multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless patient care.
  • Participate in team briefings, handovers, and debriefings to ensure effective communication and continuity of care.
  • Liaise with other hospital departments to support patient flow and timely care delivery.
  • Escalate clinical concerns to the CNM or appropriate senior staff promptly and appropriately.
4. Professional and Quality Standards
  • Adhere to hospital policies, infection prevention and control guidelines, and relevant national endoscopy standards (e.g. JAG, HSE).
  • Participate in audits, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and service delivery.
  • Contribute to the implementation of clinical governance and risk management strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with safe sedation, decontamination, and equipment traceability procedures.
5. Education and Professional Development
  • Maintain professional competence through ongoing education, reflective practice, and participation in in‑service training.
  • Engage in clinical supervision, peer review, and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Support the orientation and education of new staff and student nurses within the Endoscopy Unit.
  • Maintain a personal and professional development portfolio in line with NMBI requirements.
6. Health and Safety
  • Promote a safe working environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, infection control, and manual handling policies.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or equipment faults promptly to the appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures and drills as required.
