This position reports to the Lead Dispatcher. He/She will direct calls for service for emergency purposes and direct non‑emergency inquiries. The role is contingent upon successfully completing and passing a comprehensive background check. The training process to work towards being a Public Safety Dispatcher will commence upon completion and passing of a comprehensive background check and subsequent testing. Responsibilities include answering the phone and assisting citizens with requests for emergency and non‑emergency services for police, fire, sheriff, and emergency medical service;
directing citizen inquiries and non‑emergency calls to the appropriate agency; maintaining records of work performed; and performing related duties as assigned.
Employees sit at a terminal and listen to a communications headset to process or dispatch calls and complete paperwork. They must be able to communicate clearly in complex and stressful situations and read and discern visual images on small liquid crystal displays, including multi‑colored lights.
Employees work with dispatch equipment and communicate with citizens and emergency personnel in highly stressful, possibly emergency situations. They collaborate with other employees in the workgroup, citizens, and other law enforcement agencies to discuss requests for service and potential criminal activities, exchange information, request assistance from other agencies, and make referrals when necessary. They also read and understand technical and professional manuals to record work activities, keep records, or work with computers.
Employees operate and maintain several office machines and equipment such as specialized computers, related information systems, and two‑way radio dispatch equipment. A typing speed of 35 words per minute and completion of a Criticall test with an eligible score range are required. They gather, organize, translate, and process information from various emergency callers.

Valid Texas Class C Driver's License is required.
Required Qualifications- Age – at least 18 years of age
- Education – high school diploma or GED
- Citizenship – must be a U.S. Citizen
- Criminal History – must not have been convicted of a Class A or higher Misdemeanor, ever, or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years.
- Military – has not been subject to a Dishonorable Discharge or Bad Conduct Discharge
- Medical – must have been examined and found suitable by a Physician. This may consist of a Drug Screen only.
- Psychological – must have been examined and found suitable by a Psychologist/Psychiatrist
- Family Violence – no Family Violence convictions
- Must satisfactorily pass a polygraph examination.
- Must satisfactorily pass a hearing test and drug screen.
Ability to attain the following:
- CJIS awareness certification
· AHA CPR Certification - IAED Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification
- TCIC/NCIC Full Access training and certification
- Must complete required training and pass the TCOLE State Licensing Exam
