POSITION: Elementary Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO: Principal and Executive Director Teaching & Learning
SUPERVISES: As assigned
EDUCATION:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Mid-Management or Principal Certificate
- Certified in the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS)
- Pass Bilingual or ESL exam through the Texas Education Agency. After two unsuccessful testing attempts, employee must attend 6 hours of ELL professional learning provided by the MISD’s ELL Department. Must be completed by the end of the first contract year
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of three year’s successful teaching experience (teaching level preferred matching level of position selected)
Essential Functions
Instructional Management
1. Interpret the MISD curriculum guides and assist in program implementation.
2. Assist with the administration of system-wide and special testing programs.
3. Assist with the monitoring and reporting of teachers' methods of charting pupil progress.
4. Develop an awareness of special programs such as Reading Recovery (elementary level), resource, library, gifted, special education and ARD's, bilingual or ESL, federal and others.
5. Follow state and local policies related to the teacher appraisal process.
6. Conduct classroom observations and teacher conferences in a professional manner.
7. Participate in school improvement activities as delegated by Principal.
School/Organization Climate
1. Promote a positive student learning environment and positive staff morale within the district by providing in‑class support in the areas of classroom management, positive student reinforcement, motivational strategies, and maintenance of positive student rapport.
2. Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
3. Foster collegiality and team building among staff; encourage their active involvement in the decision process.
4. Provide for two‑way communication with superintendent, staff, students, parents, and community.
5. Communicate and promote expectations for high level performance from staff and students; recognize excellence and achievement.
6. Facilitate effective and timely resolution of conflicts.
School/Organization Improvement
1. Participate in required reporting and accounting procedures such as textbook management, attendance, inventory, etc.
2. Assist in the planning and preparation of the school budget.
3. Assist in constructing schedules for the campus.
4. Assist in planning and conducting fire and disaster drills.
5. Assist in orienting and monitoring the work of substitutes.
6. Implement policies contained within the current policy handbook adopted by the MISD Board of Trustees.
7. Make appropriate decisions and accept responsibility.
Personnel Management
1. Develop an agenda and conduct faculty meetings.
2. Assist teachers as needed in classroom instruction.
3. Assist principal in teacher assessment to determine staff development needs.
4. Assist in the selection interview process of campus staff.
5. Assist in the recruitment and selection interview process at district level as assigned by the Superintendent or his designee.
6. Assist with the mentoring process of new hires at campus level as assigned by the principal or his designee.
7. Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of assigned mentors at campus assigned by facilitating Mentor‑First Year Teacher (FYT) meetings.
8. Conduct pre‑conferences, observations and post‑conferences with assigned new hires to collaboratively identify priorities, select goals and develop a professional growth plan. (Include input from Teacher Supervisors and other appropriate personnel).
9. Provide inductees in‑class support/resources (observation results, materials, modeling, team teaching/planning, in service, personnel) needed to strive toward mastery teaching and mastery learning.
10. Report assessment needs to appropriate personnel, i.e., teacher supervisors, instructional coordinators, computer services, when additional instructional and technical resources are needed for inductees.
