POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Assistant Coach - High School Band/Percussion
Department: Activities
FLSA Status: Exempt
Date: August 8, 2025
Stipend: $1600

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Assist the band directors in developing all aspects of the band program.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the band director

Essential functions of the job may be modified at any time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Teach the fundamentals of all instruments in the percussion domain, including posture, grip, performance techniques, and marching techniques
• Be present for rehearsals and performances
  • Rehearsals include mini camps, five hours/week, and 4-8 hours every other Saturday
  • Performances estimated between 26 and 40 hours total, including three away competitions and regionals
• Teach student/equipment safety
• Teach equipment maintenance (body, drums, mallets, electronics)
• Assist directors in maintaining all instruments and notify of any necessary repairs/replacements
• Other duties as assigned by band director

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:>

EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED equivalent required
Undergraduate degree preferred

EXPERIENCE: Experience as a coach at the secondary level is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to represent the school community with high character when interacting with a variety of public groups, i.e. leagues, organizations, schools, and media
• Ability to communicate with all activities staff, as well as parents, students, other staff members, and visitors to the school
• Demonstrated knowledge of band
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is generally performed in the practice area and/or event area
• Work hours may vary depending on the needs of the activities office and practice needs, and may include days, evenings, and weekends

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Typical demands require the employee to:
  • Spend majority of work time standing and walking while performing job duties
  • Frequently lift burdens weighing up to 30 lbs. and occasionally push/pull burdens weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Frequently use eye, hand, and finger coordination to enable the use of athletic equipment, other equipment, and writing utensils

COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS: The staff member may be required to analyze, communicate, compare, compile, compute, coordinate, copy, evaluate, instruct, negotiate, synthesize, reason, and use interpersonal skills.

BENEFITS: PERA defined benefit contribution retirement plan included. This position is stipend-based and therefore does not include benefits other than paid sick leave as outlined by the Healthy Families Healthy Workplace Act.
