About the Role:
The Hydrovac Operator plays a critical role in safely and efficiently excavating soil and debris using high-pressure water and vacuum technology, primarily to expose underground utilities without causing damage. This position requires precision and attention to detail to ensure that excavation sites are prepared accurately for construction or maintenance activities, minimizing risk to existing infrastructure. The operator is responsible for maintaining and operating hydrovac trucks and related equipment, ensuring all safety protocols and environmental regulations are strictly followed.
Collaboration with construction teams and utility companies is essential to coordinate excavation efforts and support project timelines. Ultimately, the Hydrovac Operator contributes to the successful completion of construction projects by providing safe, non-destructive digging services that protect underground assets and support corrosion control measures. This position requires significant travel and will require you to be gone typically 3-4 weeks at a time (per diem and lodging provided!)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) (preferably with a tanker's endorsement) with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience operating hydrovac or similar excavation equipment in a construction environment.
- Knowledge of underground utility systems and safe excavation practices.
- Familiarity with corrosion control principles as they relate to underground infrastructure protection.
- Ability to follow detailed safety protocols and work effectively in outdoor and variable weather conditions.
- Certification in hydrovac operation or related heavy equipment operation.
- Training or certification in corrosion control techniques and materials.
- Experience working on large-scale construction or infrastructure projects.
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in team settings.
- Operate hydrovac trucks to perform non-destructive excavation using high-pressure water and vacuum systems.
- Locate and expose underground utilities and infrastructure while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on hydrovac equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety compliance.
- Collaborate with construction crews, engineers, and utility companies to plan and execute excavation tasks effectively.
- Document excavation activities, including site conditions and any encountered obstacles, to support project reporting and compliance.
- Adhere and promote company SAFETY measures at all times
- SAFELY operate equipment (hydrovac truck, backhoe, trencher, mini-excavator, auger, and forklift) and pull trailers with equipment and materials to construction sites.
- Load and unload equipment and materials
- Prepare construction site and clean up when job is completed
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, tampers, and rakes
- Perform routine/preventative maintenance and inspection on equipment
- Other tasks as needed
The Hydrovac Operator utilizes corrosion control knowledge daily to ensure that excavation activities do not compromise the integrity of underground pipelines and infrastructure, thereby preventing accelerated deterioration. Operating hydrovac equipment requires technical skill and precision to safely expose utilities without causing damage, which directly supports corrosion prevention efforts.
