Overview
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to: assisting in patient care performing cardiology procedures (e.g., holter monitoring, cardiac stress testing including GXT, Echo stress, Nuclear stress with treadmill and pharmacologic options), ECGs, event recorders, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring; providing supervision during exercise sessions, risk factor assessment, appropriate referrals, patient education and quality assurance. Works with Cardiologists to ensure timely, appropriate care and collaborates with other departments to correlate exams as a team.
Other functions may be assigned.
- Supervision of patients undergoing cardiac stress testing (treadmill exercise or pharmacologic testing). Act as patient advocate, review and obtain patient medical record history to verify patient safety. Work closely with overseeing Cardiologist to assure the correct examination is performed. Monitor patient vitals (blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate, etc.).
- Perform necessary ECGs in hospital departments and outpatient walk-in exams. Maintain ECG completions through computer application to verify reads, attach orders, correct errors, and assign to Cardiologist.
- Perform accurate pre- and post-processing of testing. Accurately utilize all computer systems and programs associated with Cardiovascular Services.
- Perform all other cardiac testing such as holter monitor application and scanning, along with event monitor application, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and My Michigan Health customers and potential customers.
- Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.
- Provides department-specific duties days, nights, and weekends as assigned.
- Assists in the establishment and maintenance of student programs and assists in their educational experience as needed.
- Responsible for assisting during emergency situations, addressing administrative concerns, supervising collegiate interns, ordering necessary supplies, overseeing all program duties.
- Assists in obtaining physical assessment data including blood pressure, heart rate, oximetry reading, lung sounds, blood glucose levels and EKG monitoring.
- Ensures a safe environment for patients to exercise. Instructs patients on safe use of equipment and reinforces. Utilizes appropriate lift equipment routinely.
- Markets to physicians by direct contact.
- Possesses an understanding of infection prevention and control measures.
- Maintains the standards of the infection prevention and control policies.
- Follows hand hygiene policies and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.
- Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows and participates in further learning opportunities offered by My Michigan Health.
Certifications and Licensures: BLS:
Basic Life Support; ACLS:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support;
Equivalents may be required within stated time frames.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree;
Equivalent Experience in Exercise Science or health-related field and/or equivalent experience. Certification in exercise physiology or cardiac stress testing is preferred.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate with individuals and groups at all levels. Completion of a four- to six-month internship in preventative, diagnostic, and rehabilitative cardiology or equivalent clinical experience required. Required completion of basic arrhythmia/12 Lead EDG Interpretation course or equivalent. Fundamental PC experience. One year of hospital experience is preferred. Certification in exercise physiology or cardiac stress testing is preferred.
Physical/MentalRequirements and Working Conditions
Exposed to stressful situations including public contact, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear PPE, move about facility with or without assisted devices, and perform the functions of the job. Vision and hearing requirements with or without aids. Ability to sit/stand/walk for long periods; frequent postural changes may be required. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials; follow infection control policies.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular attendance. Physical demand level:
Medium, with lifting/carrying requirements described between 0–33%, 34–66%, and 67–100% of the workday as specified.
