Summary

Under direct supervision of the provider, the RN will be responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position must have basic knowledge of specialty and primary care and be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients. The RN will coordinate care to assure high quality, compassionate patient care is provided, oversee patients at office locations and act as the liaison with other organizations and departments.

The RN may be required to order all medical, pharmacy and office supplies to manage patient care, ensure compliance with policies, OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations and other appropriate regulatory agencies. The RN will coordinate with and train new employees, students and float staff as required. Patient education, assistance with specialty care modalities, symptom management, availability for emergencies, monitoring for compliance and management effects on high risk patients, education on prescriptions and side effects, and ensuring continuity of care with other providers are also part of this role.

General office duties such as keyboarding, filing, telephone, computer and office equipment may be performed as needed. The expectations may vary slightly depending on the practice assigned.

Responsibilities
  • (20%)
    * Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, processes medication refills, supports, directs and refers patients for consults or testing, and handles insurance pre‑certification and documentation.

    * Provides complete patient assessment within scope of licensure: greets patients/family, performs routine pre‑examination procedures including vital signs, assesses and records objective and subjective data concerning presenting condition. Updates and maintains accurate patient record through orders reconciliation, secure messaging, allergy reaction entry, medication reconciliation, and refills within scope.

    * Coordinates the care team as indicated by the provider and works with patients and families on disease process and care management.

    * Assists provider with examinations and procedures.

    * Prepares and cleans patient area, sets up equipment, cleans and facilitates room set up after procedures, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sterilizes medical instruments.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
  • Provides age‑specific needs of the population served according to standards and policies, documented through observation, documentation and peer feedback.
  • Maintains medical supplies to assure consistent supply levels to meet patient needs.
  • Understands necessary computer functions: MAPS, MCIR, Practice Management, EMR, LIS, Emageon, dictation systems and other programs to assist providers and staff.
  • If applicable, may be required to travel to satellite clinics.
  • Maintains a system for accurately documenting and coding in the medical record as appropriate per policy.
  • Participates in annual review for quality and completeness as necessary.
  • Manages patient symptoms as directed by the provider.
  • Coordinates and ensures continuity of care with other providers.
  • Demonstrates competency in Microsoft® Windows.

Certifications
  • BLS – Basic Life Support
Required License
  • RN – Registered Nurse
Required Education
  • Associate’s Degree (BSN preferred)
Experience, Training and Skills

Working knowledge of the organization’s Infor, Electronic Medical Records, and Practice Management programs preferred or knowledge of similar software. PC software knowledge must include Excel and Word.

Knowledge of medical office policies, practices and procedures normally acquired through 3–5 years working in a health care system or similar setting.

Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and interact with people at all levels, conveying concepts clearly.
