The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is recruiting for an Accountant to join our team within the Fiscal Services Unit. Your Role

The successful candidate will be assigned to the Accounts Receivable Unit. As an Accountant, you will be responsible for:

  • Preparation of the daily deposit to include reconciling online payment transactions.
  • Researching and processing bank adjustments.
  • Utilizing correct financial modules to journalize daily deposits and other required reporting tasks.
  • Reconciling Monthly Surplus Revenue.
  • Using Microsoft Excel by applying advanced formulas and balancing accounts.
  • Preparing journal entries.
  • Providing accounts receivable documents upon state auditor requests.
  • Compiling revenue data for annual GAAP reporting.
  • Assisting the Fiscal Administrative Supervisor as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Our Agency Mission The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection is committed to protecting and improving the quality of life for all by providing a broad range of public safety services, training, regulatory guidance and scientific services utilizing enforcement, prevention, education and state of the art science and technology. The Division of Scientific Services provides forensic support to local, state and federal agencies throughout Connecticut.

This division is divided into three analytical sections. They are the Chemical Analysis section (including toxicology, controlled substances, and chemistry), the Forensic Biology/DNA section, and the Identification section (including computer crimes). The laboratory also has two non‑analytical sections which include: the Quality section and the Laboratory Support Services section (including administration, evidence receiving, and case management). Purpose of Job Class (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in professional accounting.

Examples of Duties

Records complex and compound journal entries;
Prepares balance sheets and financial statements involving multiple accounts;
Analyzes and interprets accounting records and reports;
Assists higher level staff in planning, design and implementation of accounting procedures or systems;
Reviews expenditures and prepares or reviews financial statements;
Assists in budget management by compiling and reviewing agency manager program budget proposals, preparing estimates and calculations of projected expenditures and quarterly allotments, and preparing monthly reports;
Monitors fiscal aspects of grant programs by preparing or reviewing financial reports, reviewing expenditures for compliance with grant contracts, providing technical assistance to grantees in maintaining accounting records;
Recommends accounting related improvements to business practices such as accounting controls and financial reviews;
Utilizes electronic data processing (EDP) systems for financial records, reports and analysis;
Assists in EDP experts in planning and implementation of financial aspects of EDP systems;
May supervise bookkeeping (e.g., maintenance, balancing and reconciling of accounts), accounts payable and/or receivable functions or other accounting related paraprofessional…
