Overview

Public Safety Dispatcher I: responsibility involves operating 911 communication systems, computer systems, telephone networks, and worldwide police telecommunications to facilitate emergency response.

Detailed Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive, review, and transmit emergency-related and law enforcement-related communications via emergency 9‑1‑1 systems, ensuring proper routing and information dissemination.
  • Coordinate activities of emergency and public safety personnel responding to incidents such as natural disasters, fires, medical emergencies, psychological commitments, vehicle pursuits, and safety hazards.
  • Provide information for missing or wanted individuals, criminal histories, stolen property, and sensitive intelligence on drug interdiction and terrorist activities.
  • Utilize federal, state, and municipal communication systems—including Massachusetts Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), Board of Probation files, Warrant Management Systems, Registry of Motor Vehicles, NCIC, Interstate Identification Index, and National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System—to forward information to relevant agencies.
  • Assist with rescue, fire, and emergency medical services coordination on regional and statewide bases, and participate in non‑emergency response coordination.
  • Respond to public and media requests for information on weather, road, and travel conditions.
  • Maintain records and files of radio transmissions, messages, and call recordings; perform clerical duties such as sorting, organizing, and producing copies of records requests.
  • Operate emergency TTY/TDD system for the hearing impaired and facilitate a language line system for non‑English speakers.
  • Testify in court as a material witness regarding related work product when required.
Pre‑Employment Requirements

Candidates must pass a pre‑employment screening that includes drug screening, fingerprint‑based criminal records check, comprehensive background check, and, for this series, a hearing test. Education, licensure, and certifications will be verified per the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Applicants must have at least one year of full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) experience operating communications systems or in fast‑paced multitasking environments, and a high school diploma or certificate of graduation from a Massachusetts‑recognized secondary education program.

A Massachusetts High School Equivalency diploma, GED, or an equivalent secondary education credential is also acceptable.

Applicants are required to successfully complete a critical skills assessment prior to hire.

Incumbents may be required to have a valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to the assignment, and may obtain certifications as a Communications Training Officer or other relevant credentials as determined by the Agency.
