Job Description
The Teacher of English delivers high-quality teaching and learning experiences to students, fostering a positive and inclusive environment that promotes the development of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. This role involves planning, preparing, and delivering engaging lessons aligned with the national curriculum and examination specifications. The successful candidate assesses and monitors student progress, provides constructive feedback, and contributes to the continuous improvement of the English department.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and deliver effective lessons in English, including literature, language, and functional skills, tailored to the needs and abilities of students.
Assess, record, and report on student progress, providing timely and constructive feedback to support learning and development.
Develop and implement differentiated teaching strategies to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
Maintain a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
Support students’ preparation for examinations, including setting and marking coursework and assessments.
Contribute to the development and review of the English curriculum and departmental resources.
Participate in departmental meetings, professional development activities, and school-wide initiatives.
Communicate effectively with parents, carers, and other stakeholders regarding student progress and wellbeing.
Promote the values of the institution and adhere to policies and procedures, including safeguarding and health and safety regulations.
Required Qualifications
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
A degree in English, English Literature, or a closely related subject.
Education and Experience
Previous experience teaching English at secondary school level is preferred.
Experience of preparing students for national examinations such as GCSEs or A-levels is advantageous.
Demonstrable experience in delivering differentiated instruction to meet diverse learner needs.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong knowledge of the English national curriculum and examination requirements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of motivating and inspiring students.
Effective classroom management and organisational skills.
Ability to assess student progress accurately and provide constructive feedback.
Proficient in the use of educational technology and digital resources to enhance learning.
Commitment to continuous professional development and collaborative working.
Preferred Qualifications
Postgraduate qualification in Education or English-related subject.
Experience of teaching English as an additional language (EAL) or supporting students with special educational needs.
Training or certification in safeguarding or child protection.
Working Conditions
The role is based within a school environment in Yorkshire and the Humber, with duties carried out during standard school hours. The post requires flexibility to accommodate occasional evening or weekend activities such as parent meetings or school events. The position involves standing for prolonged periods and working with students of varying abilities and backgrounds. The Teacher of English adheres to all health and safety guidelines and safeguarding procedures to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
