Primary Function
An Asphalt Distributor Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates. The operator is responsible for operating an asphalt distributor by applying specialized emulsions to roadways, which are then covered by a chip spreader, and setting the pace for the paving operation. This position reports directly to the Paving Foreman.
Position Requirements- Drive and operate distributor truck equipped with a tank to spray asphalt emulsions on road surfaces
- Connect hose from storage tank to truck tank and move lever to fill pressure tank with asphalt liquid
- Regulate burner to heat liquid and start auxiliary pump
- Snap or screw on spray bars to attain required width of spray
- Turn valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjust levers to adjust height of spray bar from road surface
- Monitor flow gauges, tachometer and temperature gauge to insure uniform distribution
- Perform daily safety checks of fluid levels on oil, water, fuel and inspections for leaks and damage to machine before operation
- Maintain daily equipment to remain in proper and safe working order and notify supervisor if equipment needs repair
- Understand and execute different emulsions; shifts may vary according to project
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task
- Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment
- Report any problems to manager and adhere to company safety regulations
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently
- Follow verbal and written instruction
- Communicate effectively
- Display excellent interpersonal skills
- Perform any other general duties as specified
- High school diploma or GED required; one to two years related asphalt and road construction experience
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B with N-tanker & X-hazmat endorsement
- Thorough understanding of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other related details
- Pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check
- Pass a pre-employment “Fit for Work” physical
- Provide valid documentation for the I-9 Immigration document
- Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors and the general public at all times
- Report to work at the designated start time
- Willing to travel and work away from home, including nights and weekends when necessary, and to work overtime when required
- Maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets company standards
- Work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold
- Adhere strictly to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- Work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA and MSHA
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Previous related experience in construction field is preferred
