Position Overview

The Religion Department invites applications for a full‑time tenure‑track assistant professor in Judaism. We welcome a religious studies scholar and teacher with extensive training in Jewish history, thought, and practice. Facility with classical Hebrew and competence in the texts of rabbinic Judaism are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to teach Jewish religion beyond the study of the Bible. Precise specialization is open, but we especially seek expertise beyond the contexts of Europe and North America and distinct from Middlebury’s current strengths in modern Jewish history and the social‑scientific study of the Jewish people.

Responsibilities
  • Teach an introductory course on the Jewish religious tradition.
  • Deliver lectures and seminars on more specific topics.
  • Participate in the team‑taught “Introduction to Religion” course and a senior seminar in theories and methods in the study of religion.
  • Contribute to other interdisciplinary programs such as International and Global Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, Environmental Studies, Comparative Literature, Black Studies, and/or Food Studies.
  • Maintain a full‑time teaching load of approximately 4.5 classes per year, including occasional contributions to the First Year Seminar program and Winter Term course offerings.
  • Engage in service to the College: committee membership, and serving as Director or Chair of a Program or Department.
