Equipment Operator – Michigan Paving & Materials – Paw Paw, MI, 49079 – Job

Position Overview

Equipment Operator is responsible for controlling and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment, ensuring safety and efficiency on construction sites.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ability to safely, accurately, and efficiently help operate various pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance: clean up around the job site and surrounding area, conduct regular inspections and maintenance on machinery to ensure it is in safe working conditions, lubricate and perform general maintenance.
  • Follow safety protocols: adhere to all safety regulations and workplace standards, obey applicable traffic laws, rules, and regulations, participate in weekly safety meetings (Tool Box Talks).
  • Load and unload materials or equipment as required.
  • Report issues: promptly report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, incidents, defects, accidents or violations to supervisors.
  • Collaborate with team members: work closely with other crew members to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule, display a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
Other Requirements
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site in proper work attire ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Individuals are required to wear PPE, steel‑toed footwear, safety glasses.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Previous experience helping operate or working around heavy equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • CDL preferred.
  • Ability to pass pre‑employment screening and testing.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements, procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) policies.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed outdoors, on a job site, in extreme weather conditions and for extended hours.
  • Work environment periodically exposes employees to high levels of noise, dirt, grease, and dust.
  • Employee regularly works with or near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances or materials commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt and concrete.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, frequently walks on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes, in varying weather conditions, exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles and extreme heat or cold.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may require protective equipment at some facilities.
Physical Demands
  • Language skills: ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rate, ratio, percent, and interpret graphs.
  • Reasoning ability: ability to solve practical problems and handle variables in situations with limited standardization, interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Vision abilities: color, close, and distance vision, peripheral, depth and focus perception.
  • Work can be performed at heights requiring the employee to climb and balance in ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
  • Required to walk, stand, sit, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch and lift.
  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a shift of at least eight hours per day on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes, in varying weather conditions.
  • Must use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to carry, lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Must operate equipment under extreme temperatures and extended hours.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on project needs and demands.
