Purpose

This Natural Resource Management Assistant is an Ameri Corps position. Backcountry campsite monitoring was initiated as a baseline for evaluating changing physical conditions in campgrounds as part of the ISRO Wilderness Management Plan. At ISRO, campsite monitoring was conducted in 1996, 2002, and 2017 and data collected includes total impacted campsite area, amount of exposed soil, vegetation loss (when compared to undisturbed reference areas), erosion, and damage to trees.

We are planning another round of surveys in 2026 to evaluate:

• how visitor use impact has changed over the past 30 years;

• if original monitoring metrics are still relevant or if they need to be modified;

• if current campsite regulations are effective at minimizing impact to natural resources.

Description of Duties

Backcountry campsite and resource impact monitoring SIP participant:

• The natural resource management assistant will be responsible for following established protocols under the guidance of a park supported graduate student to assess resource impact on water, soils and vegetation, acquiring photos of individual campsites, compiling and summarizing scientific and site data, and contributing to a report evaluating 30 year changes in visitor use impacts.

• The assistant will interact with backcountry campers throughout the field season, informally survey campers on backcountry camping facilities and potential crowding, and educate campers on low‑impact recreation.

• Because the project will involve visiting the most heavily trafficked areas, an additional task of the SIP will be to monitor campsites for invasive species.

• The position requires extensive camping and hiking throughout the 12‑week period.

Deliverables

Deliverables will be determined based on park priorities in coordination with staff and may be tailored to the SIP’s unique abilities and interests. The participant will collect campsite data on tablets, perform QA/QC in the computer lab, and will contribute to a final report summarizing the field data collection.

Qualifications
  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
  • The applicant must be available to participate for the entire 12 weeks in order to be considered and participate.
Preferred Qualifications

The SIP participant must be an undergraduate…
