Responsibilities
  • Manage care delivery for patients throughout the length of stay, including assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation, and evaluation; coordinate care with other professionals and delegate tasks.
  • Provide selected aspects of physical care within the scope of professional nursing practice; document and communicate patient responses during each tour of duty.
  • Lead various patient‑care duties such as operating room support, preparing surgical supplies, and maintaining equipment; observe changes in patient condition and take appropriate action.
  • Assist with discharge planning and support the continuum of care.
  • Perform scrub duties across multiple services, including neuro, ortho, and spinal fusion services; attend after‑hour calls on a rotational basis.
  • Complete swing‑bed documentation as required for the Workday CBL “Swing beds.”
  • Adhere to the Michigan Public Health Code, organization policies, and procedures.
  • Engage in quality improvement, professional development, and peer review activities.
  • Meet competency requirements specific to the population served.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred; must be obtained within 8 years of hire.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing in Michigan.
  • BSN requirement enforcement: if not achieved within 8 years of hire, employment terminated.
  • BLS certification required; critical care or ALS certifications may be required for some units.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and medical equipment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
  • Physical stamina to lift up to 50 pounds and work with computers or CRT for up to 70% of shift.
  • Competence in evidence‑based nursing interventions and continuous education.

Standards of Practice
  • The registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patients’ health or the situation.
  • Assesses the patient’s physical and developmental needs.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs.
  • Documents nursing history and age‑appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths for assigned patients.
  • Reviews vital signs to assess condition of patient and detect deviations from normal.
  • The registered nurse analyzes assessment data to determine patient problems or issues.
  • Uses assessment data to identify patient problems.
  • Confirms problems with patient and family when appropriate.
  • Documents the expected outcomes and plan of care related to the problems through use of the clinical pathway and outcome teaching record.
  • The registered nurse identified expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient.
  • Utilizes the patient/family input when defining outcomes, incorporating patient values, ethical and cultural considerations.
  • Coordinates discharge planning for outcomes not achieved utilizing the continuum of care available.
  • The registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Incorporates clinical pathways into the plan when appropriate.
  • Develops individualized interventions with patient input when appropriate.
  • Considers data from other members of the healthcare team when developing the plan of care.
  • The registered nurse implements the identified plan.
  • Implements appropriate interventions.
  • Administers prescribed medication and treatment in accordance with approved nursing techniques and policies.
